Wondering how much you'll have to increase your budget for Bosco's food and drink, brother Dean.

Last Friday we went out to dinner at our local Longhorn Steakhouse. It's usually packed on a Friday and it would take you about 30-45 minutes to be seated. That night there was only one other couple in line in front of us and we were seated in 5 minutes. There were a lot of empty tables and by the time we were done the place still had not filled up. We're thinking people are starting to "hunker down" for the hard times.

I'd be interested in hearing how people are coping with the gas prices.

Last week while I was at work I was told by the boss that our crew change location would be changing. For more than a year I had been traveling from my house in Houston, TX to the airport in Galveston, TX to fly via helicopter to the production platform I work at on the Gulf of Mexico. That was 60 miles driving one way. Now we will be flying out of Mouton Cove, LA and that is 250 miles from my house. I was not happy to get the news. The crew member I work with lives in Austin, TX and he was really bummed out about the change.

What did we do? The first thing I did was to confiscate my wife's Honda Civic that gets 36-38 mpg highway and she will drive my Subaru Forester that gets 26-28 mpg highway. The second thing I did was to start car pooling with the crew member that I work with. He drives from Austin to my house and then we drive in the Honda together to Mouton Cove.

All in all it costs me about $12 to drive one way to work with this car pooling arrangement and I live offshore for seven days before returning home for seven days off. So I end up spending about $50 a month commuting with gas at $3.50 a gallon. In the big scheme of things that is not so terrible. I lived through the 1970's gas shortages, rationing, and gas lines. Now that was terrible! I'd much rather pay ridiculous prices for gas than to have no gas at all to get to work.

On a side note...to lessen the blow my employer agreed to pay us travel time for our extra commute that we didn't get before. So I end up getting 8 extra hours every paycheck and actually come out way ahead dollar wise. I hate driving 4 hours to get to work though.
