I'd be interested in hearing how people are coping with the gas prices. What are you doing to cut down?

Eating out seems to be the first cut people make. Maybe it's just in my head but I seem to notice that the local restaurants have a lot more vacant tables these days. Even on a usually popular Friday or Saturday night, we haven't been waiting to be seated in awhile.

Living in a Michigan city that was designed for the automobile can make it difficult to drive less. When I do drive, I'm glad I have a very fuel efficient 5 speed car. I live about 3 miles from work so I can bike there. Most stores are less than 3 miles away so I can also bike there and pack groceries and goods into a backpack. Basically, I bike and walk a lot more and use the bus when it's raining or too cold. There have been some times I've gone weeks without using my car and my health has improved because of it and I save a ton of money. I'm already keeping my eye out for a bike for my fiance. Of course...living downtown makes all of this possible... for rural households, I can't imagine the costs....

I bought a bicycle for around-town errands. We don't use the car all that much anyway, and I needed exercise that didn't involve the gym. :)

That sounds amazing! I had not considered walking to work because I often have to leave for meetings and to give clients rides, but in the past few weeks, I've noticed that I haven't needed my car. So it'll be nice to walk there when I know that I won't have to leave until the end of the day!

I would love to use mass transit or ride a bike, but in Central FL, that just isn't a feasible answer when you live away from the city center. Riding a bike is hazardous and there are hardly any sidewalks. When I was in London, I fell in love with the Underground, and I wish we had something like that here...

Oil companies back in the day bought up and closed public transport infrastructure (trollies, bus lines etc.). To keep us using cars.

:o Global conspiracy :o It´s like X-files :P

Not a conspiracy - just business.

fact. not conspiracy. know your history.

Oh. I have a 28 mile drive to work. It's a government site and I can't live much closer. So I ride in a van pool.

Every time I ride the van I save $5 (my car gets 27mpg). If I had an SUV it would save me even more. Plus we take turns driving so we get to sleep if we want to.

A coworker of mine who lives in my neighborhood suggested carpooling to me just this past week and I need to get back to him. We have about a 40 mile commute (both ways) each day, so it may be a good idea. However, I'm concerned about the reduced flexibility that comes along with carpooling.

When we change our cars, we'll be getting hybrids. The choices are limited, but if we are going to commit to a car for several years, then hybrid, for us, is the only way to go.

Gas is now $3.50 a gallon. In some MA towns it is a few cents cheaper, but not much.If this keeps up,I'm going to buy a motor-scooter.

There's not much I can change at this point. We both have commutes that are less than 10 miles each way. I can't move any closer to work without doubling my income and public transportation or carpooling aren't options either.

To be honest, the increase in gas prices so far haven't really affected us. Of course, if they continue to go up, at some point it will.

Those things don't weigh much. And both my wife and I have to go up and down a hill for work. A regular compact is a struggle in the snow. Plus our current 'fortune' may change and we may find ourselves (yet again) commuting to work via one of this states many fine (haha) giant highways and let's just say i'm not taking no kimchi cab on the garden state parkway. I don't have a deathwish.
