For the meat eaters

I was watching the news and there was a story that covered how there have been talks about selling meat from cloned animals in grocery stores and meat markets. Personally, I don't think I'd buy any. What are your thoughts?

Before I respond, can anyone confirm..... aren't we eating cloned fruits and vegetables? I know the plants and seeds were cultivated to form disease-resistent hybrids and such so.... is that cloning?

I love seafood, so if it came down to it I wouldn't miss having meat if it was to be cloned

I voted 'no', but if I don't know it's cloned meat I wouldn't know if I was eating it...

Nope, I wouldn't! Maybe it's me, but I don't 100% believe it when someone (FDA, USDA, etc) tells me something is safe. It seems more and more frequently the FDA is recalling or slapping a black box label on something that was widely used and widely promoted (Cox-2 inhibitors, phen-phen, cingular, advair, etc.). Money rather than safety and rigorous scientific methods being the motivation. And beyond all of that its too new. Remember, everyone thought trans fats were great because it made food "tastier" and had longer shelf life? Now look at it.

I think hybrid seeds and plants are different than cloning. Cloning is replicating the same cell (or animal) over and over again. Its like making a photocopy over and over. Hybrid plants are genetically engineered (either through continued cross pollination- a natural process, or through genetic manipulation in a lab); its more like hand picking certain characteristics. Kinda of like how pet dogs were bred into having different breeds.

If I didn't know about it, I suppose I would. I buy all our meat, well, what little we eat....mostly chicken, at the farmer's market. They sell it out of the backs of trucks and such. I doubt they are going to tell me much more about it.

yes I would most of the food we eat has been altered in some form, unless we produce it ourselves. Cloning in agriculture has been around for years eg horticulture. Modified food has its pros and cons and like almost every thing else there are ethical issues surrounding it. Personally I approve of controlled experiments but it is hard to control the extent to which human being will go.

yes were are. Most fruits and vegetables are reproduced asexually eg grafting. Cloning does not have to be chemically induced neither does it have to go to the molecular level, it is simple making identical offspring (copies ) form one parent organism.
