So a Dutch citizen living in Holland can opt to give birth in the US and the Dutch system will pick up all the costs?

A Dutch citizen who comes to America on let's say a F-1 visa and happens to be pregnant can stay here and give birth in the US and costs are covered by the insurance.

A Dutch citizen who comes to America on a tourist visa and is pregnant at the time and still allowed to fly to America, gives birth in America: costs are covered by insurance.

There are more examples, but think we have been going way off topic :-)

EXACTLY. My husband had to get 3(!) stitches in the ER one time and it cost a whopping $1000.

At least he got stitches. I spent 1 hour and a half because I cut my finger but I did not need stitches or surgery. They only wrapped my finger and checked my temperature, etc. My bill was of $1500! That was when I arrived and did not have health insurance. Like 2 doctors came to see me for 2 minutes. :(  I guess I was the only case that afternoon at ER.

Thank you all for your replies !

I just want to highlight that I did not open this topic to discuss about my insurance or financial status. I think many of you don't know how European laws work nowadays, so let me be the one being concerned whether is legal to benefit the maternity leave while being a resident of another country- which btw it is, with the condition of not getting another job in the meanwhile. There are a lot of health insurance, and I do not mean the travel ones here, that cover all kind of services outside the country where they were signed, with some restrictions of course, but still better than nothing.

Once again thank you all for your replies, it pretty much helped us to make a decision. Hope it will turn out well and in time .

The majority of the people who has replied to you are from European countries so please enlighten us to what awesome insurance Romania has that other EU members don't? Because my personal insurance company in Sweden would not cover me, especially if I was not in the US as a tourist and I know many stop working once you become a resident.

It has nothing to do with European law. European laws don't dictate what health insurance companies need to cover, especially not in the US. Even the European Health Card doesn't even give you the same benefits in all EU countries. So please, enlighten us.

We are just curious.

It's my understanding that she has purchased a private insurance to supplement what is covered by her Romanian insurance.  For a price, private insurance will cover anything and everything.

Simply not true.Insurance is not a logical industry admittedly, but this makes no sense from an underwriting perspective.

OMG They should tell you how much it will be before they do anything. I'd staple my own finger for 1,500 dollars.

As someone that has lived in Romania and the US- I can tell you that :

  • the Romanian insurance company selling you the policy will promise all things under the sun just to sell it to you - and when time comes to deliver they don't -
  • there is a high level of ignorance when it comes to understanding how enormous medical costs can be here - folks outside the US just don't get it that if you end up with a baby in NICU it can go into the hundreds of thousands !!!
  • a very close friend - visited the US, had to have emergency gall bladder surgery - he held an international insurance policy from Romania that was supposed to cover costs - hospital said they wouldn't perform surgery without deposit - he deposited $40,000 - luckily he could afford it - he ended up calling the insurance company from the hospital to file the claim- They REFUSED to pay it - this guy was out of pocket for the full amount
  • the other thing to think about is the fact that a lot of folks take for granted that they can just show up at the ER and the doctors will have to deliver the baby anyway at the ER - therefore they are "not worried" -

  • sending I130 05/16/2007
  • cheque is cashed on 06/11/2007
  • NOA1 in mail 06/13/2007 (who said 13 is badluck )
  • 07/30/2007 After no touches and no other signs we just got an email with the APPROVAL of I130....Thank God !....now what ?

  • 08/07/2007 Case received by NVC and case number assigned :))

  • 08/13/2007 DS3032 and AOS bill were generated

  • 08/14/2007 Emailed choice of agent ...i'm so curious when they will accept it...hopefully soon

  • 08/21/2007 DS3032 and AOS fee bill arive in mail

  • 08/27/2007 paid AOS fee bill
  • 8/28/2007 DS3032 choice of agent accepted
  • 9/3/2007 IV fee bill generated

Thanks for posting, now that makes sense.

thank you - I get irritated when I hear folks from RO believing that it's all "milk and honey" over here - I work my ### off and I live a decent life - but no one put down the red carpet when I arrived in JFK almost 10 years ago .... :)
