If you sent the files from overseas, might take some time. Uscis should be able to confirm when they mailed your documents. Just keep calling until you get a nice rep. Call around 7-9 AM EST for the least amount of wait time. It should then only take about a week from that date for nvc to receive it.

My approval date was 3/16 and sent out by USCIS 3/22.  Sometimes they take a little longer to mail your documents out but they should be able to confirm teh date when it was sent.  You case status online should be "Sent to Department of State" once they mail it out.  What does your case status reflect now?

 

In addition, it would take a week or so for NVC to actually open the envelope from their end and assign it a case number.  They will quote you a 6 week time from between USCIS and NVC assigning you a case number to give themselves slack but it shouldn't take that long.  Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do at this point.  if your approval date + 6 weeks has passed, you can then contact your senator and ombudsman for assistance as well as escalating to a tier 2 rep because at this point, it might be likely they misplaced your file.

My case was approved on 03/16 and it did not get mailed out to NVC until the 04/12, almost a month :o.  NVC received my case on 04/18 and I was able to get a case number and invoice number on 04/20, I was able to complete my DS261 on 04/20 and then had to wait to pay my AOS bill on 04/22.  I called NVC today to get my DS261 reviewed over the phone and the rep stated that she did not see it in their system but on my end it shows as complete, I said this to the rep and she stated that their system is slow and that she will note that I am the agent for the case.  For mine AOS fee it shows in process so the rep said that once it shows paid I can go ahead and pay the IV fee and complete form D260.  It has been a long process but I feel like we are almost there, I'm just praying that we don't get a checklist.

Experiences about when they assign a number are welcome 

@BelenC I'd suggest keep calling. Depending on the rep you get on the other line at NVC, some may give you both case and invoice #, others may say it package received, but have not yet been input into the system and will take 6 wks etc. Many of us here just kept calling, and eventually were able to obtain both case number and IIN way before the "6wks" that they say.

@H&T from previous members that have completed the process, they have put down "Same as item No #'. It's suggested that you not leave anything blank.
