SSN once entering the US on K1 Visa

If you get the SSN after marriage you may have to wait until you get the EAD due to training issues with some SSA offices. People have often reported issues with this as their visa is not in married name, their name in the data base is not in married name, and the USCIS has no record of you until you file your AOS.

No need to wait 2 weeks, since the I-94s became electronic/automated the need to wait for the data to be entered digitally into the system is no longer an issue.

To avoid any possible hassles, you can apply for the SSN in maiden name that matches the visa whether married already or not. Then file for AOS in married name. You can return to change the name on the SSN to your married name once you receive the EAD or green card in your married name.

You don't need a SSN to open a bank account. I opened mine years ago when I was still living in Sweden.

You're moving to Texas. We have a 30 day residency requirement, which means you need to have lived in Texas for 30 days before you can take your driver's license and you need to show proof of that residency status.

Correct, I could not add my husband to my account because he did not have SSN.

Yeap correct, I think it depends on States and banks. I could not add my name to my husband's account when I first arrived without SSN, was told to come back another time.

I went to Wells Fargo, Chase and Bank of America.

Sometimes you have to call or talk to someone higher up. It can be done. It's called a w8ben and then use the w9 once they have an SSN

In dealing with the SSA, you are in the federal regulation, and not the state. The law is the same across the board. Therefore if you encounter an employee that tells you something contrary to federal law, and contrary to their own policy manual - try going higher up. And if still not, a different office. The SSA office doesn't always employ the brightest bulbs when it comes to immigration.
