Administrative Processing ???

My fiance had her interview today. she was given a letter that said "temporarily refused" my heart nearly stopped !!!

I showed it to the clerk, she says, it's under "Administrative Processing"

What is this "Administrative Processing" BS ?

I never heard of this. They used to to background check. Is that the same thing as background check?

she has never traveled to US. She worked as a Physician for 10 years, in Iran.

I really want this step to be over so that I can marry her in the US as soon as possible.

The laws of Immigration to US are generally inhumane, and borderline abusive. I went to US under very easy circumstances, I won my greencard in lottery, some 20 years ago, and my visa was issued the same day. I could travel from UAE to US the same day if I wanted to.

True, US government uses a bunch of vague and unhelpful terms but this is by far the most confusing term I have heard. Her case has already been in Administrative Processing for 4 months, unless you don't count USCIS, DHS, CSC, NVC as US gov administration. What is this extra step for? What does it try to accomplish?

They don't say how long does it take. Why can't they simply say how long does it take? Is it a matter of days, weeks, months, years?

this is frustrating beyond comprehension.

A little something happened 15 years ago called 9/11. That is why it takes longer especially for people from middle eastern countries. Yes it's awful, but they have a lot of checks to do now. Look at what happened in San Bernadino. Sometimes people can have suspicious employment or similar names. It's a necessary step.

It can be days, weeks, months. Did they ask her to provide any other documentation?

Well the world is not what it used to be 20 years ago obviously and security checks must be made for the safety of the citizens of

the USA. AP can last days, weeks, months and years. Your status says temporarily refused and that makes it not permanent.

The AP process is vague and not transparent for security purposes.

Come on, you expect the USA to allow anyone in without security checks ? That is naive to think so, especially from Iran.

Simmer down and wait your turn, it could change back to issued in a few days/weeks.

Check out the AP forum. Many are in the same situation. Processes change as circumstances change. Continued acts of terrorism don't help I am sure. I've seen many many posts about increased AP and background checks since the San Bernandino and Paris attacks. Our country's safety is a necessity.

AP is a vague term that can mean a bunch of things-from we are waiting on a document from you, we are processing your visa, we are investigating you, or we are getting a SAO (Security Advisory Opinion). The SAO is the one that can take the longest and can drag on for years. There are a few different types of SAOs and there is no way to determine which one was requested or even the status. You can email the embassy once every couple months and ask for an update, but be forewarned that you are most likely to receive a blanket response that they are working on your case and will contact you if they need anything else. I would suggest looking at the AP forum on this site.

As for what this additional step is for/what it tries to accomplish is it tries to stop the flow of people who are either fraudulent or pose a security risk to the US from entering the US.

I agree there should be more transparency, but at the same rate if they tell you processing will take 60 days and it ends up taking a year perhaps that would be even worse.

But, considering the specific country.

I really want this step to be over so that I can marry her in the US as soon as possible.

The laws of Immigration to US are generally inhumane, and borderline abusive.

No they are not.

I went to US under very easy circumstances, I won my greencard in lottery, some 20 years ago, and my visa was issued the same day. I could travel from UAE to US the same day if I wanted to.

Different country, different past relationship with the US and US citizens.

True, US government uses a bunch of vague and unhelpful terms but this is by far the most confusing term I have heard. Usually takes a few weeks, sometime months, sometimes a year. Depends, considering the country, I would have expected this and you should have also.

Have you considered moving to Iran?

I have, and I think, I will be a lot happier. It might come as a shock to you, but US is not for everyone. I came to US expecting different things. For example I expected to meet intelligent people, with an open mind, and an interest in making the world a better place. What I have experienced in the last almost 20 years, has been a society hell bent on making as much money for itself as it can possibly can, a society that worships money, to the exclusion of all human affairs.

I have nothing against that. It's just not my cup of tea. I stayed hoping against hope to see some change from all the activism that's going on, which is by the way one of the few good things in the US. But it has become clear that the moneyed interests are too entrenched to let that happen.

I have decided that moving back to Iran is probably the best, Sure, the US government will loose the benefit of a PhD in theoretical physics, experienced in several computer technologies but heck, there is always another delusional guy somewhere in India or Iran, who will work long hours to help things move along.

There has never been a case of terrorism from any Iranian citizen, against US citizens. Not once. Most Iranian immigrants end up being highly productive members of American society.

the US Embassy hostage crisis can not be classified as terrorism. It was a take-over which although ugly, harsh and unnecessary, was not terrorism. The hostages were harmed, both physically and psychologically, and the US government has had punished the entire Iran collectively for 37 years.

The Iranian government has an anti-american bent. But the Iranian government represents a tiny sliver of Iranian people, most of which never apply to any US embassy for visa.

Iran is proven to be state that sponsored terrorism. Organizations, such as Hezbollah and Hamas. Si, I would disagree with your statements.

True, but please notice the distinction, the State of Iran sponsors the terrorist operation of Hezbollah and Hamas. Just like the state of US supported the terrorist operation of Mujahedin, Contras, Cuban terrorists, etc. etc.
