We are in the process of getting a K1. She wants a religious wedding in her home town before she leaves. We have a priest that has agreed to perform the wedding without any of the legal paperwork so it would be a religious but not a legal wedding.

Would this put our K1 application in jeopardy?

There have been people who were denied because of a wedding during K-1 process even if it was not a registered legal wedding.

Yep, it has happened. Your big gamble on potentially derailing the entire thing.

Not a good idea as said before and if this is a Catholic priest not sure then there is no way they can just do a ceremony without registering it.

I would get married after the K1 is issued and she is with you in the US; after that you can go back and have a religious wedding later on. I too want a religious wedding, but since I got married here in the US, I will wait until my AOS is complete since I can't travel now.

4.11)...My alien fiancee has been issued a K-1 visa. Can we get married abroad and then come back together to the US with the K-1?

A...No. The alien must NOT be married when s/he enters the US on a K-1 visa. Also, if using the K-1, the couple must marry in the US within 90 days of the alien entering on the K-1.

(FAQ Note: Some couples arrange to have a non legal ceremony prior to the fiance(e) leaving their home country, in order to satisfy the wishes of family, or to have a celebration if the family is unable to travel to the US for a wedding.

I don't know if you are Muslim, but for us, you CANNOT have a religious marriage (Katb al-Kitab) if you are applying for a K1 visa. It was the FIRST question my fiance was asked at his interview. I would assume it is the same for a religious ceremony in any other religion as well.

Yes that is true. In my case I got married here in the US and will do the religious wedding later on. He is saying that they she wants a ceremony just to satisfy family but not legally (with signing documents). I believe he means just symbolically like a going away party.

no... but what will get you in trouble is doing stupid things such as pretending you are married (action and/or photos), and allow people (consulate, CBP)assume or misunderstand things that are not true. That is what has burned people before

ya, also an issue in some African countries, as well.

so, without knowing which country yer foreign fiance is in, is really difficult to give a pointed, direct answer.

I met a guy here in VJ that his fiance's (From India) visa was denied because they got marry through a religious ceremony (only, no paperwork done) a couple of weeks before the interview. The CO told her to filed for k3 or cr1, and they had to started the whole process again.

Get marry later!

Catholic priests cannot perform a non legal marriage ceremony. Code of canon law does not permit this.

1/28/11 Sent package to Texas

K-1 is a FIANCE'(E) visa and no wedding whatsoever is allowed if the applicant doesn't want to be denied for obvious reasons. She can wait for that after she gets her conditional green card and can go back and organize her wedding in her hometown
