MLGood got a reaction from iedg in CR-1 Interview Questions
    I'm so happy for you!!!!
Regarding the interview, I was well prepared, but the consular officer didn't asked for anything. The only things I provided when I got there were: Original marriage certificate, original birth certificate and passport (to the brazilian guy that works there, and later to a brazilian lady). She took the documents and put the information in the system. She asked me a few things: Name, place of birth, my husband's name and place of birth, my name after married, because I chose to change it, things like that).
There was only one consular officer interviewing everyone. It as a very nice lady.
I wish you all the best!!!! Everything will be okay!

    Hello everyone!!!!
I'm sure this is good news for those who are wondering when they are going to get their interview appointment letter from the NVC. I want to share our experience after we were DQ'd at the NVC. Here are the dates:
    DQ on March 14 2022.
Interview appointment letter: March 21 2022.
Interview date: April 11 2022 (Rio de Janeiro)
I think it is important and relevant to share when good things happen! I would love to see someone posting this information, because give us an idea of how long it is taking to get an interview scheduled at Embassies abroad. Since they don't share this information.
Miracles happen!!!! We are extremely happy!!!!
Good luck to all of you! God bless!

MLGood got a reaction from JBRE22022 in CAN I GET SSN EARLIER ONLY BY SHOWING STAMPED IMMIGRANT VISA AS A PROOF OF PERMANENT RESIDENCY?
    Hello everyone!

I arrived in the US one week ago. (IR1)
We are waiting for my permanent resident card and SSN to arrive in the mail (the fee was paid 16 days before my arrival) I heard that it can take up to 90 days to be mailed to me, and I didn’t want to wait that long to start working.
Our question is: as the now stamped immigrant visa is valid as a proof of permanent residency for one year after arrival, can I go in person to a SS office and be able to get my SSN earlier by showing them my passport? Or do I need to wait for my physical GC to arrive?
    I appreciate your help!
    Thank you!

Did you ask for a SSN on the DS-260?  If yes, then you have to wait for it to be mailed to you.  SSA was notified when you got admitted to the US.  If you go see them in the first month, they will turn you away and tell you to wait.

The immigrant fee that you paid is for the plastic green card.  Has nothing to do with SSA being notified that you entered the US.  Entering the US on your immigrant visa triggers them notifyiing SSA that you need a SSN.

If you didn't ask for a SSN on the DS-260, you can certainly try to go to SSA to apply for one.

Is this USC willing to marry this fast (within 20 days)  and pay out $1225 for you to AOS ?
and then completely support u for 1 to 2 years?
the USC needs to know cost of health care for u would be a big bite out of any budget

money problems can be a big issue and the downfall of a marriage
don't ask for troubles like this

    go home
    talk a lot
    visit each other
and then make this life changing decision

and yes,,,  i believe in love at 1st site but i also know people change , situations change,  jobs change,  having kids changes life
and marriage takes more than love to make it work

You just met someone and you're already in love?

Just make sure you're not being promised marriage, end up overstating and then won't even get married as the USC changes their mind later down the road. I personally know someone who went down this exact road.

Additionally, if you stay after being promised marriage, sometimes the petitioner, knowing that you're at their mercy, may start playing mind games to effectively control you.

My best advice: Go home. Continue talking freely without any constraints. If things work out later, you marry.

    All the best

That is great news! @MLGood, hope your interview went well!
Were you able to schedule the medical examination before the interview? In which city? I heard that there is a great backlog which is a problem especially for those already in the USA
I believe that another big backlog now is between I-140 approval and the DS. It is a limbo since USCIS clears out cases once approved and the DS only counts the backlog after DQ. Since December I140s approved are not going from TSC to NVC. Nebraska seems normal.

@MLGood after I posted I did exactly that, I emailed all the approved doctors in Brazil and ended up traveling to Belo Horizonte. We were able to complete all of her medical exams last week (all the results were negative, she also only had to take one shot). Now we are just waiting for her interview date, which is on the 25th of April. Like you said, even a delay of a single day for us that have already been waiting for so long is too much hahaha, it was not the cheapest option to travel all the way to MG for a simple medical exam, but it is what it is.

That is a good sign that the backlog at the consulate has been eliminated.  In 2017, we received my wife's interview letter 5 days after getting the "case complete" email from NVC......Great news!!!

Replying since you quoted me. I have no disagreement with you  that H&R and the other taxes services that pop up in Walmarts and on street corners are not skilled in the finer points of having a foreign spouse. For those who have read the tax forum on here for a decade,  you will have read many instances of CPAs also making mistakes. I agree that the tax return filed as Single is incorrect.  But that is something to straighten out with the IRS. Debating the merits of H&R Block is getting off topic.

If the OP has an interview soon and the tax return is already uploaded to the NVC files, it may be difficult to get a replacement tax return in time. So the OP may have to go with what she has and hope that the consul will be most interested in the money and not the filing status as others have experienced. She has a 2020 return filed MFS which she could also show if a discussion of marital status even comes up. I would just sit tight and keep my mouth closed unless they ask “Why did he file Single?” The answer is “H&R Block told him it had to be that way since I am overseas with no SSN.” Brazil does not appear to be a difficult or suspicious consulate based on reviews posted.

As far as getting right with the IRS, they could amend 2021 to married filing jointly once she arrives and gets her SSN and save money over Single or MFS. If they want to amend now, I certainly would make H&R do it at no cost since they made the error. Show them the IRS documentation on how to do it.

My husband went to HR Block too and asked them to file married but filling separately because I’m overseas but they filed for him as single …. So he had to go back and ask to file a 1040 amended tax return to correct it. So yes…

send this site to your husband as it clearly explains how to add spouse to taxe returns even when the spouse lives outside the US (nonresident)

they take courses and certify (H&R Block's certification only) in just 2 weeks
and do not always take the yearly update courses
tax returns have changed so much over the years ,  H&R block needs to keep up and they don't

If this can help - since the HR block person filed also single for my husband - he went back and filed the amended form 1040 stating he’s married filing separately - we are submitting the tax transcript still showing single (my husband called IRS and they told him it will take about 16 weeks for the update to show on the tax transcript online), and we are submitting the amended form 1040. I hope this helps!

as a point of reference, any "casual" tax provider like H&r block or others usually have zero clue with how to deal with immigration-related aspects of tax. i'd recommend finding a good tax accountant that specializes in cross border taxes (if it's beyond DIY requirements of specifying marital status) to avoid heartache in the future.
