You will need to file the I751 within 90 days of when your GC expires. Do not file even one day early, so count back 90 days from the expiration date on your GC. Now this assumes you are still married, if not, you can file anytime requesting a divorce waiver. After you file the I751, USCIS will send you a 48 month extension letter effectively extending the validity of your expired GC for that period, so if you do any international travel, you will need both the expired GC and extension letter to re-enter the U.S. Good Luck!
