So, are they going to re-issue Green Cards to those dual citizens who renounce US citizenship, yet want to remain in the US?  This is just crazy stuff, imo.

Or even wonkier, some of the people affected will be dual citizens by birth. They would never have had green cards to begin with.

I will start to worry about this if the bill actually gains any traction and starts actually getting co-sponsors.  There are thousands of bill introduced annually and it is like 1-4% of them that actually make it anywhere.  Additionally, if this does actually make it to Trump's desk would he sign something that would impact him personally?

We have been thinking to make the move and i can live as wife of a Morocan without getting citizenship there

Eligibility for SS benefits would be a main concern. As a U.S. Citizen, you can get SS in all but sanctioned countries. As a foreign national, there is stricter criteria. Ultimately you could loose your retirement benefits that you have worked so long for and planned for in in old age. A catastrophic prospect...

The problem is that the bill doesn't provide any clarity on compliance. It may be impossible to comply. It provides only one year for the renunciation, but in most cases it takes longer, not to mention that a foreign state may simply not allow it. People could go stateless by first applying to renounce with a foreign gov and then losing their US citizenship if the deadline isn't met.

 

The bill is also unconstitutional on many levels (14A at the very least, because it would make all dual citizens secondary, conditional, citizens). It's illogical too: not taking an action is not a voluntary action (the Supreme Court has decided that a loss of citizenship must be voluntary), but the bill states that it is. 

 

I am rarely optimistic when it comes to such issues (i.e. I never bet against the power of irrationality - so the tax argument alone doesn't alleviate my worries), but I just can't see how this joke of a bill could ever pass the Senate (even without the filibuster), the House, and be signed by the President (even a successor of the current one whose family wouldn't be directly existentially affected by the bill).

I think that's fair. The 1-4% is for bills that are clearly written and change little of national importance. This bill would create a catastrophic existential crisis for 20 million Americans, many in swing states, and is written in a way that hardly makes sense. I analyzed the probabilities with ChatGPT (yeah, I know) and all things considered it came below 0.01% to pass the Congress and 95% chance to be immediately struck down by the courts even IF it passed. So, it's just a political statement at this point.
