How long is visa valid for and can you still be refused when you get there [merged threads]

Advised to have a medical after visa interview  based on DUI.  A one off conviction at 48 years of age struggling with menopause.  Will I be penalised for this?  I only want to take my children to Walt Disney World

You can try if you really want to visit. No guarantees you will get the visa even with medical.

Medical?  Tourist visas do not require or consider medical exams.

Which country did you interview in? Do you have evidence of sobriety or are you still drinking?

I've seen medical requests reported here for UK folks when applying for B1/2 visas and a history of alcohol-related incidents - fights and similar.

Probably from Canada, as Canada is making very hard for US citizens with DUI or DWI convictions to visit Canada. 

That's my guess.

Well, I'm not aware of any other reason why they would care about DUI on a tourist visa. 

 

OP. Go to France, Hong Kong or Japan. They have Disneyland there too.

I was told it wasn't an issue but it is clearly. That's good advice and your right thank you

Even if you can get a visa you’d need a waiver for it, and that’ll add 7-8 months. I wouldn’t have said it’s worth the hassle, cost or time when you can pop to Paris instead.

I might be confusing the need for sobriety with immigrant visas no tourist visas- as generally DUIs (plural) in the eyes of the US immigration is seen as having a substance abuse problem. In those cases IV applicants generally have to show they were sober for 1 year to obtain the immigrant visa.

 

 

I'm assuming you applied for an ESTA and were rejected? 

 

 

Without knowing more you can read the experience of a poster in a similar situation:

I would go to the medical, be honest about your drinking and see what happens. Hopefully, you will not be deemed an abuser and you'll be able to go to Disneyland.

I've heard of this case before: UK citizen with history of substance abuse applies for ESTA, is denied, has to apply for a B and do a medical. I don't have all the details but it does seem like something that happens at least for UK citizens. I'm no longer in contact with this person so I don't know what the wait time was between doing the medical and getting approved for the visa, but if it's any consolation this person did get approved for a B was able to visit the US.
