hand sanitizer

I am interested to know your opinion. When I was a kid there was no one in my school that had asthma, alllergies, or really any kind of health issues. We never took any kinds of medication and we were all healthy.

Now, American kids have all kinds of things.

I teach immigrant kids. Mexican-Americans mostly but also Haitian, African, Asian, Russian ...... Of all 40 of my kids none of them have any allergies, asthma, or take any medication for anything. I've been teaching for 13 years and have never had a student with any of these problems. Pretty incredible, huh?

My British fiance says we are too sanitized. Maybe the kids are not having a chance to build up resistance to anything?

I have noticed that my immigrant students play outside more and get dirtier. I'm not saying that they are dirty or anything just that they don't sit in front of the TV and their mothers don't follow them around with a wet wipe.

My mom cleaned everything with soap, water, and bleach. Now the kids use all this hand sanitizer stuff instead of soap and water and they seem to have more health problems.

Has anyone else noticed this? Opinions, comments....

allot of people are too poor to get allergies or at least, acknowledge them..as they are worried about food and shelter..

I think people are too sanitized now-a-days.

My sister is a sanitizing freak and always sick. I'm quite the opposite and have only had 1 sick day in 10+ years.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I would agree that we've become too dependant on drugs & anti-bacterial stuff.. but i do think it has to do with what we eat - I stopped intaking dairy a couple of years ago and it completely got rid of my allergies (hay fever etc). As soon as I slip and have an icecream etc. I get an allergy attack. I can tolerate goat/sheep products completely and doesn't give me allergies, so I really do think that our food does make us sick as well! (not even mentioning what "fast" food does to us!! :P

I think, all these sanitizer products are weaken the natural function of our immune system. I was a teacher in Germany and I noticed too, the ones who came from extremely clean households were sick more often.

We had a family where the mom would desinfect every doorknob on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day and herkids both developed allergies and asthma...

I am not suggesting o not clean your house anymore, but some people just overdo it and that seems not to be healthy either.

I usually don't use sanitizer and I am a very healthy person!

You may be onto something here. Most of these sanitiser and anti-bacterials are certainly chock-full of assorted chemicals (and I doubt that they even know the effects of some combinations of these).

Some take it to an extreme, but washing your hands after using the john is a good thing, especially before handling food. E. Coli is a nasty critter who lives in our bowels and is sometimes deadly when ingested.

Hey, nobody was talking about regular handwashing..LOL

PLEASE EVERYONE, KEEP WASHING YOUR HANDS AFTER DOING YOUR BUSINESS!!! :bonk:

But recent studies have shown that plain-old soap (or, if you want a water-free, rubbing alcohol) takes off germs just as well as the fancy-schmancy anti-bacterial. Also, the anti-bacterials leave residues (where soap is rinsed off, and alcohol simply evaporates) which can spur resistant bugs.

Yes. I don't wash my hands except before I eat or after I used the john.

BTW...computer keyboards and mices are teeming with bacteria...in such cases, those Clorox wipes are handy.

I prefer regular soap too, I have to say though, I always carry a little bottle of sanitizer with me in case there is no soap available (ok, I travel a lot, I have seen MANY restrooms in my live so far). Convenient and worked out well for me. I guess when you use them moderately when everything else fails, it's fine.

I just can't imagine to use them 50 times aday just because I touched something...
