Naturalization

Hey all,

My wife's GC is expiring next year and we are considering the naturalization route, but have a few questions.

1. Looks like time line is 7 months right now, according to this site's processing times section. Does that include the oath ceremony?

2. How long was it for those who have already done the process between your interview and the ceremony?

3.If anyone could provide any advice when going through the process which you wish you would of known before doing it, what would it be?

Thanks!

1. Yes. IMO most FOs are under 6 months. Use VJ’s timeline search to see how fast your FO is. A GC renewal will be 2 years most likely

2. Under 30 days for my wife

3. None to offer as we were well prepared due to VJ

I assume her 10 year Green Card is expiring.

1.  For my wife, time from filing to oath took a little more than 5 months.

2.  About 6 weeks (included Christmas/NY holidays)

3.  N-400 was a piece of cake.  Used the guide here on VJ and filed online.

2. Varies greatly between field offices, and another thing that can change how quickly she gets to take the oath is if she will have a name change or not. For me in Los Angeles, including a name change, it was only 3-4 business days between interview and oath in the middle of the pandemic.

3. No advice really, the N-400 was by FAR the easiest step out of all the immigration related processes I have ever been through. If there's something I wish I would've known beforehand, it would be just that - that it was a lot easier than I had anticipated, less worries.

2 year or 10 year green card is expiring next year?  If 2 year, have you filed an I-751 for removal of conditions?

Now I'm wondering too, because OP has another thread about "renewing 10 year greencard", but he talks about how they cant file until 90 days before the greencard expires - which sounds more like ROC (i-751). For a regular renewal (i-90) you can file 6 months before the expiration date.

If you look here https://www.visajourney.com/timeline/citlist.php?cfl=&op5=5,10,11

(enter the appropriate CIS Office for your case) oath dates are listed, too

2 year conditional greencard, or 10 year greencard? You don't have a timelone posted, so hard to tel.....if it's 2 year, you can file I-751 remove conditions 90 days before expiration date of greencard, and N-400 90 days before hitting 3 years of being permanent resident. My I-751 is still pending ( applied May'22) and I filed N-400 in May this year, also pending.

Time line will depend somewhat on your field office. For me (Indianapolis) it was pretty fast: filed N-400 (five-year rule) on May 31st 2023, had the naturalization interview on July 31st, with the oath ceremony coming up on September 28th. So four months total including oath ceremony.

I don't really have any advice - the process is fairly straightforward. I filed online, and made sure to triple-check responses before sending. Continually study / practice the civics questions until answers come naturally, although these should not be a hurdle.

Good luck!
