Hello,

 

During the time when I was applying for AOS, my US citizen husband was a student so I needed a sponsor for the I-864. Our friend was kind enough to be my sponsor. I am now in the ROC phase of immigration and my husband is now working. I want to free our friend from any I-864 obligations. Is there any way to do that? I am wondering this because our friend may need to sponsor family members in the future and I do not want to have my case affect him in any way.

Options I can think of from easiest to hardest:

 

1. File I-407 to relinquish your LPR status.

 

2. Become a U.S. citizen: you can file as soon as 90 days before 2024-08-18 per your timeline

 

3. Your husband and you accumulate a combined 40 social security (SS) work credits since 2021-08-18. This can happen as soon as 2026-08-18

 

4. You stay married to your husband for 10 years and he earns at least 40 lifetime SS work credits. 
 

5. You earn 40 social security work credits. 
 

6. You pass away

I have seen this question asked many times, but I have never seen anyone successfully remove a joint sponsor.  The I-864 is binding until any of the things @Mike E stated above.

August 7, 2022: Wife filed N-400 Online under 5 year rule.

November 10, 2022: Received "Interview is scheduled" letter.

December 12, 2022:  Received email from Dallas office informing me (spouse) to be there for combo interview.

December 14, 2022: Combo Interview for I-751 and N-400 Conducted.

January 26, 2023: Wife's Oath Ceremony completed at the Plano Event Center, Plano, Texas!!!😁

February 6, 2023: Wife's Passport Application submitted in Dallas, Texas.

March 21, 2023:   Wife's Passport Delivered!!!!

May 15, 2023 (about):  Naturalization Certificate returned from Passport agency!!

 

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Dying may be pushing it, Naturalising seems the obvious option once eligible.
