Huh, interesting. As a green card holder you should already get unrestricted SSA and real ID right?

No name change. Been 2 months it still pending. No unrestricted SS and no real ID

That's concerning. I'm not sure why she doesn't already have an unrestricted SSA though, since you can get that done once you get permanent residence.

 

I guess if she's not working there was no need to do it earlier.

We have same issue. She and I. Exact Same thing. She got her GC last year and I got my GC early April 23. On her case, the SSA office actually took her restricted card and shredded it and said “ wait for ur new card” and then turned out they sent the letter (that I also received but at the office ) stated we need more time because DHS can’t verify the change of status. 
 

She and I coincidentally went to SSA office just few days apart. Note I don’t know this person, she’s in NYC

Each state has its idiosyncrasies. In AZ, I got the real ID DL back in 2018, when I was still a GC holder. Since I was not a US citizen yet, next to the gold star it says, "Limited-Term". The expiration date was set according to the expiration date of my GC (2025). I believe that US citizens in AZ don't have that notation on their Real ID DLs.

 

I didn't bother updating the DMV when I became a US citizen in 2020. Almost positive that I'll have to renew in person and not online in 2025, but I hope that my renewed Real ID DL won't have the "Limited-Term" on it!

I wonder if that would be the same here in IL. Have not tested it since my DL expiration still predates the GC one. But I think it's a standard practice for those on other visas like H-1B/H-4 too.

 

Back in WA there is no Real ID at all for non citizens. The only options are standard licenses, and Enhanced Driver Licenses. The latter are Real ID compliant, and let you drive to Canada without a passport, and so are only issued to citizens 😞

If you have a US passport, that can be used instead of a SS card when getting a Real ID.

Possibly, in my case they refused my passport and specifically asked for my SS card and non-expired driver license.

Weird. The passport is the first one listed on the California DMV website and even says it is the preferred document! The SS card isn't even on the list. I used my passport, utility bill, and bank statement as my docs.

How interesting, it must have changed recently. A few years ago, if you don't bring a social security card (maybe W2 can be substituted) you can't get a Real ID (personal experience, my wife forgot to bring hers). But I just went through that page, selected foreign passport with valid I94 and utility bills and indeed it said that is fine.

Yeah, I remember for a little while here in CA, years ago (pre-Real ID, and before CA issued DL to undocumented residents), new applicants HAD to bring their SS card with them to get a DL, even if they had other forms of ID. Lots of people misplace their SS cards, so that requirement frustrated a lot of people. Don't know when that requirement changed.

And Real ID is for greencard holders too, don't need to be a citizen for that. Just apply for one.

I never mention real ID is for citizen only. I know that. I'm also pointing out the DMV have everything I gave to apply for.

You specifically said "I find it frustrating that they gave me the non-real ID", something you never applied for and yet is frustrated you never got. That's what my reply was about. You don't get something you don't apply for, so no idea why it was so frustrating for you to not receive a Real-ID.
