Hi,

My mother, aged 84, became US citizen today after having immigrated to US on family green card.

We need to apply for Supplemental Social Income (SSI) to enable her to get Medicaid.

What are the steps to follow ?

You are in California, why is she not on Medi Cal?

  • You are age 65 or older and you or your spouse has worked 0-29 quarters in Medicare-covered employment. You must enroll as a voluntary enrollee and pay the full Part A monthly premium. Note: Low-income programs can help you pay these premiums if you meet the income and asset levels.

Medicaid is likely to be a better bet, being 84 I would have thought it unlikely she worked in the US unless she delayed Citizenship a long time.

There are probably advantages to Medicare, I can think of one, but I can think of many more for Medicaid, make me wonder if anyone has done a comparison.

My mother is not eligible for Medicare. She is eligible for Medicaid only having no resources of her own. She came to US as legal immigrant 7 years ago.

You can buy into Medicare after 5 years as a LPR

We approached a non profit legal advisor, who claims that we need to get SSI. Otherwise, Medcaid will not be approved until we receive SSI.
