I may have to travel out of the country this weekend for a funeral, I have an expiring GC (June), 24 month extension letter and citizenship interview (May 2nd).

If I go I plan on bringing both of those documents to return but has anyone had to do something similar?

A new wrinkle now, I could be traveling after my interview date due to the difficulty of arranging funeral services, obviously if all goes well and I am approved with same day oath, I won't have a passport. Does my extension letter and GC still count for travel?

When you take the oath you turn over your GC, maybe extension letter, but GC will be turned in regardless.

If you travel after the oath you are already a US citizen so you must enter using a US passport.

What you could do is enter through a land POE with your enhanced ID/ drivers license if you have one.

The other choice would be getting the US passport while abroad.

The only fast passport you can get overseas is the limited validity emergency passport and then you'd have to apply for the regular one upon return (I think the $$ paid would be applied to the regular passport application but don't quote me on that). It takes 5-6 weeks for regular passport overseas.

Is there a temporary travel passport that could be applied for if I was approved?

Thanks, I just found that. Seems that if I can get everything approved and oath ceremony same day, I could go to the local passport agency (make an appointment first) to get an urgent travel passport.

Hey! How did your interview go, and did you end up successfully getting a passport in hand quickly afterwards? I'm in a similar situation now and wondering how it went for you!

Interview was approved, ended up not taking the oath that day and traveled on my GC with approval letter and extension notice. Have same day passport appointment next week now that ceremony has been done.

That's so great! Glad to know everything worked out for you given the circumstances.

Well, I managed to mess up my passport agency appointment by forgetting my naturalization certificate, I was able to get a 1 year passport in time to travel for my cruise but have to re-apply when I get home to get a full 10 year passport so more cost but that was my fault.

Nice to be fully done with USCIS.

They issued a valid 1 year passport without any proof of citizenship????
