Removal of Conditions (I-751) Interview AND N400 Naturalization Interview

Hello,

We have been waiting for over 2 years now for the I-751 interview to be scheduled for my spouse. In the meantime, we also filed the N400 Naturalization form in July 2022. We just received notice for an appointment/interview/test for the Naturalization in November 2022. We are very happy about that (especially since they told us it would be next July probably). However, we have a friend also going through this that did pretty much the same thing and also has his interview next week. That friend has scheduled an I-751 interview at the same time. Apparently they need to remove the conditions first and then issue the citizenship test. The concern we have is that we have not received any notice that we would have an I-751 interview at the same time. Are we supposed receive separate notice, is it supposed to be on the N400 appointment letter? My friend is likely working so I don't know how they received their notice of the joint interview.

Any information is appreciated. I don't know if we need to call USCIS about this (I dread that damn system.) Thank you.

Just prepare for a combo interview.  The I-751 must be approved before the N-400 can be approved.

In our case we had a combo i751/n400 interview. Our interview invitation was only for the N400, nothing about the i751. I brought my spouse and had updated evidence for the 2 year old i751 case to the interview.

Be prepared to do the i751 interview and let the officer know that you are prepared to do both interviews with your spouse if you are called in alone.

In our case in Sacramento my spouse was allowed to accompany me into the field office and we were called in to interview together.

I think a combo interview is the most common outcome with a i751/n400 pending together but it is slight possibility the i751 could be approved without an interview or USCIS may not have the i751 file at the time of the interview and won't be able to adjudicate it at the interview.

There's two possibilities.

Best case scenario:

They conduct a combo interview and you get both i751 and n400 approved the same day and even better get to take the oath the same day if your local office allows.

Worst case scenario:

They conduct n400 interview and tell you to come again later for an i751 interview. Once the i751 interview is passed, both n400 and i751 will be approved.

I was in the same situation as you..and I was stressing over the same issues…waiting for I-751 to be processed and filed for N-400 when my window opened.

I was maybe 10 days away from the scheduled N-400 interview date when out of the blue I received a phone call from my service center in Tampa informing me to come for my interview with my husband because they needed to process I-751 first and I-751 requires both of us at the interview.

so, i had a combo interview.

The interview lasted maybe 30 minutes including the civics test.

Congrats on your scheduled interview! You’re almost done!!!

Thank you! Hopefully, they’ll be as efficient. The way this journey has been, I wish I could be more confident.

I know I was going crazy…especially with my N-400 interview approaching and I-751 still needed to be processed. I think I was checking my USCIS account a billion times a day. Drove my husband nuts…

When they called my cell, I didn’t even answer LOL. It showed on my phone as a possible scam…

the lady that called left a message and a phone number. I was at work and almost cried…checked the number she left to see if it’s legit and she called again maybe 15 minutes later.

i will not tell you to stop stressing…I think you will regardless…i will tell you that you are a minute away from this adventure to be over!
stay positive

  • 1 month later...

I thought I would update folks on what happened today. We both went to the center and told them the situation , had lots of evidence and everything. The offficer said they would take care of the I751 and the N400! Well my spouse went in first, and came out about 20 minutes later. He was told that was it. The officer didn’t to speak with me and Javier would receive notice in about a month for his swearing in! They never interviewed me for the I751 and she just processed it.I won’t believe it all until we actually see the notice, but regardless, this is major progress. 😅😅😅😅

In the same boat as you folks. I brought my spouse to the N400 interview because of the pending I751, however after explaining the situation to the IO, I was told that my N400 will be adjudicated on that day and did not need my spouse to sit with me. After passing the interview the IO assured me that all they needed was to get my I751 A-File for a look through and barring any questions from their side I should receive an invitation to the oath taking and should monitor my mail for that.

And the same as you we're almost there but not quite until that invitation comes in the mail. What I'm hopeful about is that your IO gave you a potential timeline of 1 month. So thats a reference point for me as well.

Thank you for posting your experience.

Cheers
