Question about baggage on connecting flight

We've not been able to book a direct flight because of how expensive it is so instead we've been able to book one on japan airlines that has a stopover in Narita. Has anyone else had to go through there before? I was wondering if I'd have to pick up my luggage and check it in to the new plane when I transfer over? It was booked under one ticket but there's two different planes although they're both japan airlines. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

I went through Narita on my last trip to the Philippines 2 years ago. I checked my luggage in Phoenix and didn't see it again until I picked it up in Manila. Your luggage will be transferred to the right plane by the airlines. As always, take things that are of the most value with you in your carry on. Narita is a very nice, clean airport, easy to navigate.

When I booked my flight via Delta in 2019, my flight was Manila-Narita-Atlanta-Pensacola. I checked in my bag in Manila, retrieved it in Atlanta, checked it in again in Atlanta and retrieve it in Pensacola.

When I booked my flight via United this year, my flight was Pensacola-Houston-Hawaii-Guam-Manila. I checked in my bag in Pensacola and retrieve it in Manila.

You can always ask then check in counter where you are going to get your baggage. You can see the details of it in the baggage tag as well.

Hope this helps!

When I flew via Narita (Korea/Narita/DFW) I didn't have to worry about my luggage until I reached the US. Then I had to collect everything and recheck it for the domestic flights in the US.

One thing that did happen was they called me up to the counter while we were waiting to board to check my documentation (as I am not American or VWP passport holder).

So, your partner might have to confirm the address they are staying at and show their visa again before flying to the US.

ETA: Japan Airlines are amazing. Best flight experience ever.

We have traveled through Narita many times, never touch out luggage there (and we always change aircraft for the flight into Manila)

Frequent Narita traveller here. Also never touched transfer baggage here. Great airport...

Not a newbie but lost my old info years ago) I have been through this process before --all the way through naturalization-- This site has always been a great help to me.

The baggage will be checked all the way through (from departure city to arrival city) if the flight booking has one record locator.  If you made separate bookings, for example you booked one flight from the US to Japan and then a separate flight from Japan to the Philippines, you would have two record locators and you would have to pick up your bags in Japan and recheck in.  I highly dont recommend this if it was done.  Ive seen travelers book a flight from the US to Japan on Delta, United, etc and then have a cheaper flight on Cebu Pacific from Japan to Manila and in this situation you have to get your bags in Japan and recheck in.

Also, having separate tickets could make you need to follow the transit country's immigration policies as well as their Covid policies for entering the country and not just for transiting.

The United States is now a country obsessed with the worship of its own ignorance.  Americans are proud of not knowing things.  They have reached a point where ignorance, is an actual virtue.  To reject the advice of experts is to assert autonomy, a way for Americans to insulate their increasingly fragile egos from ever being told they're wrong about anything.  It is a new Declaration of Independence: no longer do we hold these truths to be self-evident, we hold all truths to be self-evident, even the ones that arent true.  All things are knowable and every opinion on any subject is as good as any other.  The fundamental knowledge of the average American is now so low that it has crashed through the floor of "uninformed", passed "misinformed", on the way down, and now plummeting to "aggressively wrong."
