I have googled but I’m not sure I understand (as usual when it comes to this immigration process) 😓

so Can I apply for a social security number before being granted an immigrant visa?

Or I have to wait till after entering USA with my immigrant visa?

if I can apply from now..what’s the procedure? How do I start this

thank you all for your time

What stage are you in the immigration process? Have you completed DS-260 already?

The SSN cannot be requested until the the immigrant is in USA, as a Resident.   There is a place on the DS-260 to request that to be done when the immigration happens.  Though that is not always obeyed, and you have to request the SSN at a local SSN office.

Before the immigrant is a resident it would be possible to get them an ITIN, allowing you to file as Married Filing Jointly.   I just did that when me wife used her Tourist Visa and we spent a few months in USA.  Though can also be done outside of USA,  though that seemed like more trouble to me.

Not yet. Still waiting on taxes.

we are at the nvc stage yet and gathering supporting documents

Ok. When you get to filling the DS-260 at NVC stage, you'll have the opportunity there to request SSN.
