Obtaining appointment for passport for travel within 72 hours

Hello everyone!! 

 

I became a US citizen last Friday and have been trying to obtain an appointment at the dallas passport agency for a passport to be able to travel on Monday. I have been trying since last Friday and have been calling their passport hotline and checking on appointment portal and have had no luck. Does anyone know if they allow walk ins and any words of advice. I have to travel on Monday.

Is that even possible?   Usually the expedited passport service is nowhere near that fast.

Dallas does do 24 hour passport but read the following as you have to turn in Naturalization original to get this (and it is not guaranteed)

i would travel on other passport and take a copy of naturalizaiton  paper with me leaving original in a safe place at home

 

You are supposed to make an appointment first but when you need your passport in 24 hours, there is no time for that. You can try just showing up at the nearest agency when the doors open but there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to submit your application form. There is a limit to how many applications can be processed at each agency. Those with a high volume of requests may not be able to attend to your request

 Unfortunately, my post is for making appointment 13-16 days before travel so it might be too late for you. I would still try the website, I've seen same day slots become available for some agencies. If you do try a walk-in please report back to us!

Can you take the certificate of naturalization with you and apply for a passport in a US embassy abroad?  Not sure how long it takes, just an idea.

According to airlines and US government website, an individual cannot use naturalization certificate and foreign PP to board or enter US. This was one of the avenues I was angling to use. Had to scratch it out after reading government/ airline regulations. 

 

The problem here is not leaving US but coming back. You can leave with your foreign PP. Coming back is the issue.

Yes you can. However, you have to make an appointment at the local embassy, appointments which may be like 2 months out and well after your would be return, as was my case when I tried to use that option. So I erased that idea.

Yes you can. However, you have to make an appointment at the local embassy, appointments which may be like 2 months out and well after your would be return, as was my case when I tried to use that option. So I erased that idea. 

 

For the first point, an airline will indeed likely deny you boarding, but you can technically fly back to Mexico first and cross the border by land, for example Tijuana/San Diego (this can work as well with Canada as soon as the U.S.-Canada borders reopen). You should expect secondary inspection but this should work. Land borders are usually more relax and easy. Prior to the WHTI regulating what documents are required to cross the borders, people would show a Driver License and their Birth Certificate at the Canada/U.S. border.

 

Regarding the second point, it all depends how long you plan to stay abroad. If you visit family in your native country, you can afford to stay for 2-3 months and enjoy your time there. Not all embassies are busy. The U.S. Embassy in France has passport slots available as early as in 2 weeks (probably due to cancellations), but the average wait time is 1 month. Then, assuming that the Embassy has its own printer, you can get your passport fairly quickly in a matter of days.

Although we have to agree that that might be costly, especially if you booked a return flight so as to save cost. That's why I didn't bring it up.

 

For my case, a one way trip will cost the same as a return.
