Hey visa Journey!

I'm nearing the final steps before naturlization and it dawned on me, how am I going to be able to sponsor my parents if I was furloughed from my job in 2020? My tax return for the year 2020 is going to be shot. How will USCIS determine if a person is eligible to proceed as the role of acting sponsor if so many people due to the pandemic were either layed off all together or weren't working their regular work hours? My salary for all other previous years exceeded way over the poverty line, so I'm a bit concerned. I'm curious to know what protocol USCIS will take towards many people in this current situation/global climate we are facing.

Much Thanks!

Unfortunately you will have to find another job or find a joint sponsor if you want to sponsor your parents after naturalizing.

It will probably take 12-18 months for you to petition for your parents.  With Trump's 1 year ban on IR5, it may be a longer wait.  Your income when you file the I-864 is key.  When the time comes, you will be back at work or be employed doing something else.  Don't worry about this.

In such case I'd presume you owned some assets, so document and appraise them, and add them to your 864.

They will determine it like they always determine it.  No income or assets no sponsorship.
