Fiance's passport expiring

Hi, I'm curious if anyone on here has had a similar issue. My fiance and I are still waiting for him to get an interview at the embassy, however his passport is going to expire at the end of July. Ordinarily he would just renew it but there is currently an armed conflict happening in his home state and his ethnic group is being specifically targeted. Discrimination against his ethnic group has drastically increased including preventing them from boarding international flights or interrogating them for hours before they board international flights (also firing from jobs, imprisonment etc). It's unlikely he will be able to renew his passport or they may confiscate his passport and then he just wouldn't have anything. Has anyone dealt with anything similar? Is it better to show up with an expiring passport or no passport because it was taken away but at least we tried?

Its best to show up with a passport that a visa can actually be attached to.

An expired passport is worthless

Depending on how much remaining time, an expiring passport may not have much value either.

YMMV

I assume he's going to need a new passport at some point - I can't see how he could enter the US on a k1 without one?

So sorry to hear about his situation. I would try contacting the US embassy there to ask about it as this is a very location-specific situation, but he can’t be the only one with this issue. Another thought: if he is able to travel by land over the border before his passport expires, could he try to get in touch with his embassy in a neighboring country (Kenya perhaps?) to try to get a renewal there? I hope you find some sort of solution!

He has to have a passport, if he shows up to the interview without passport I think they will put his visa on wait until he is able to obtain one..

He can't travel to USA without a passport  >>> For certain nationalities, the passport or other travel document must be valid for at least six months beyond the proposed stay in the United States<<<

Sorry to hear about your fiancé's troubles.

He will have to find a way to renew his passport. Already, his current passport expiring in July is no longer valid for travel to the States.
