Hello everyone,

Me and my husband  (USC) got married 3 week ago in the US. I left the US because of the wrong advise of a lawyer and now I'm starting to work as a freelancer back in Germany. My husband has helath insuance with blue cross and could add me to his plan (even without SSN). His plan also works abroad. But I do find mixed information about the fact that you need to have a valid status in the US to be able to get insurance (which kind of makes sense).

I am afraid to risk not being covered in case something happens. Does someoe have any kind of experience with that kind of situation?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

You need to review the actua healthl plan documents as each plan can be unique as it relates to enrollment qualifications

YMMV

In Germany as a citizen you should look into coverage there until you come here

as this applies for maybe not all but most US policies

Even if you're covered by your regular U.S. health policy and supplemental travel health insurance, you should be ready to pay up front for medical care you receive abroad.Jul 16, 2019

I recd treatment in Europe and paid for my care and then had to submit translated documents when i returned to get reimbersed payment for my fall

I added my Brazilian husband to my work health insurance a week after we got married in Brazil.  I returned home, filed the I-130 petition for a CR-1 spousal visa, and HR added him to my health insurance with only the marriage certificate.  The plan states that while outside the US he was only covered for emergency care, reimbursable with receipts, and lots of other restrictions in the fine print.  So although he was covered to some extent during the year we waited for him to get his visa and immigrate to the US, he didn't use it while in Brazil because healthcare in Brazil is free.  Good luck with the CR-1 process!

Thank you, that was very helpful!

I am going to read the fine print carefully.
