Justin Trudeau has apologized after a photo of him wearing brownface makeup in 2001 emerged on Wednesday

The picture, obtained by TIME, shows a then 29-year-old Trudeau wearing brown paint on his face, neck and hands while wearing a turban and robe

Trudeau was attending an 'Arabian Nights' themed gala at West Point Grey Academy, which is the private school in Vancouver where he taught at the time

The photo appears in the West Point Grey Academy 2001 yearbook

He also admitted to wearing black makeup in high school to perform as African-American singer Harry Belafonte

Is this the end for Trudeau.

Ooops did not include the link but it is being covered by every media source.

Time magazine's coverage of this goes into detail about the USA's long and painful history of white performers wearing black face to demean and dehumanize African Americans. Eventually I had to wonder, what does any of that have to do with the PM of Canada wearing brown face. I would ask, does Canada have a similarly long history of demeaning people of Arab descent this way? The answer to that question may give some insight into what the reaction will end up being. People seem to forget, it is not just the act of wearing colored face paint that is considered racist, it is also because of the long history behind it.

Personally, I don't think Trudeau will do that well in the next election. He might squeak by or he might not. I don't really think his fortunes will turn based on this incident. He is not going to be labelled a racist, because he isn't one. The paint doesn't change that.

Trudeau acknowledged this is something Racists do, not sure why they called it brown, looks black and he did black faces anyway.

Definitely something that was once commonplace, and that people generally now understand is considered racist. As is often the case, understanding the history and context often explains the why. We have many things like that in our society. I just recently learned the phrase "long time no see" originated from racist beginnings. Doesn't mean everyone who has ever used that phrase is a racist. It does mean we should be aware that the connotation exists and why. If you care about such things. Some people don't.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims responded angrily to the report.

Executive director Mustafa Farooq said: "Seeing the prime minister in brownface/blackface is deeply saddening. The wearing of blackface/brownface is reprehensible, and hearkens back to a history of racism and an Orientalist mythology which is unacceptable.

@ElizabethMay

I am deeply shocked by the racism shown in the photograph of Justin Trudeau. He must apologize for the harm done and commit to learning and appreciating the requirement to model social justice leadership at all levels of government. In this matter he has failed.

He did apologize. Says so in the title. Does she want him to apologize again?

He should know better than many that was a trick to admit his guilt, did he really think an apology would somehow negate this.

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, a Sikh, said the image was "troubling" and "insulting".

"Anytime we hear examples of brownface or blackface, it's making a mockery of someone for what they live and what their lived experiences are," Mr Singh told journalists on the campaign trail in Toronto.

Looks like the media is going after him too. I was just telling Bill the media isn't only hard on Trump.

As a white person, I can't say that wearing blackface or brownface or whatever-face besides my own has ever crossed my mind. What goes through people's minds to think this is somehow okay? Trudeau is not old like Ralph Northam, he's not even 50. He had the benefit of an excellent education. He was 29 (I think) when that photo was taken -- that is well old enough that the cover of "I was a dumb teenager" can take the edge off of it. On the other hand, I am not a fan of the so-called "cancel culture." I didn't support Northam resigning and I don't support Trudeau resigning. I don't support dumb college kids being suspended or expelled for this either. These are opportunities to learn from inappropriate and demeaning behavior. People feel hurt by this. Learning why people are hurt, why it's wrong, and explaining how one is going to take responsibility is the appropriate action.

Looking at that pic again, it's notable that none of the women have changed their appearance, just him. Also, WHAT is going on with his hand on that woman's chest? He practically has a finger down her cleavage. :dead:
