So we are trying to get hubby his US passport since he just became a citizen a month ago. It's been so long since I first got my passport that I am no longer familiar with the process. I know you have to apply in person if it's your first time.
So I'll start with docs first.

1. He does need to send the original naturalization certificate and a black and white photocopy correct?

2. Second ID he is supposed to provide a photocopy of the front and back of his state ID??

Please can someone verify if this is correct. We are finding the instructions hard to understand.

As for the fees he wants Expedited Service so he doesn't have to be without his original naturalization certificate for long. Does not need anything overnighted. What are the fees for this? Do they need to be all on one money order/personal check or seperate ones?

Finally he got his passport photo done at Walgreens. Will the passport agency make him retake it or will they take the Walgreens ones?

Thanks in advance.

Hey,

I just got all of my passport stuff back this past week, I did my process at the post office, it was quick and easy.

Needed my naturalization certificate - and a copy

Copy of my drivers license

Photo - they will use what you bring in if it meets the reqs.

completed application in BLACK pen

When at the post office, the department of state will only accept a check or money order, I did personal check

you can see what the fees will be by going through the questionnaire located on the site below:

I thought I heard somewhere that there had to be two seperate checks.

If you are doing it via a post office the department of state fee must be by check and then the processing fees (usually $35.00) can even be put on a card, those are the two payments - see below

Is the execution fee department of state as well?

Use this USPS page to find a post office local to you that does processing. Not all do passports. It should tell you specific hours at places near you or if you need an appointment.

https://www.usps.com/international/passports.htm

Also read the instructions provided by USPS. The $35 fee goes to the post office. The passport and expedite are Dept of State. Our post office wanted cash for their fee, but they let us make a debit withdrawal using our ATM card.

The extra expedite fee is your paranoia again. Save the money. I had a new passport in about 2 weeks so it can be quicker than you think. Nobody is going to show up and ask for his naturalisation certificate in the interim. You really need to quit wrapping him in cotton wool. He's made it over many hurdles despite your certainty he wouldn't. Have some faith.

So we tried applying for the passport at the Post office. They told him all supporting documents needed to be over 6 months old to be used. That his certificate of naturalization was too new and that his state ID was too new as well (since we just moved).

I thought you could apply for a passport right away as soon as you became a citizen?

Agreed, one can walk out of the oath ceremony, make a copy of the certificate at a store, go to USPS, apply for passport and go home.

So we went to a different post office which processed our application fine. We made two copies of the application before we left so we have a copy at home. For emergency contact my husband put my name down. But we realized when we got home it says "person not traveling with you". We dont have any plans to travel right now. Most likely we will always be traveling together but at times he may go on his own. Will this pose a problem that I will be with him on most trips and I'm listed as emergency contact?

Only if you both die at the same time. Then somebody will have to work out who else should be called. If spouse  got imprisoned or hospitalized, the other spouse on the same trip, would probably already know.

You can email the State Dept and ask them NPIC@state.gov

Hubby got passport in the mail last Friday. I know his certificate is supposed to be returned in a separate envelope. The pamphlet that came with the passport said it should come in a couple days. We haven't seen anything in the mail yet. Should we be worried?

Of course. Worrying is your #1 hobby and nobody will be able to talk you out of it.  Talk to your postmaster when you feel mail is missing.
