Ill TRY & it brief because this whole SSN fiasco has stressed me out beyond belief.

Entered on K1 fiancé visa: 13th Oct 2018

Went to local SSA office 2 weeks after arrival: 29th Oct 2018

All paperwork provided to the SSA lady on the day i applied & she told me 6-8 weeks for manual verification (which was fine by me)

Manual verification complete: 26th Nov 2018 (SSA office even confirmed this over the phone, i also checked USCIS SAVE website)

Since then, myself & my now husband have made 10+ calls to the SSA office & been told different things each time. (Spaced out the weeks, i didn’t pester)

My I-94 expired 10th Jan 2019 so i know that i wont get a SSN now because our last call to our local SSA office told us that no one had been dealing with my application the whole 13 weeks... clearly i reacted very cheesed off & i cried on the phone (LOL) & my husband decided to chase up from now on as i feel they just cant be bothered to deal with my application & feel im just being pushed pillar to post.

Is there anyone higher up we can take this further with? Beyond SSA? Or have someone investigate for us as i havent even received a denial letter... & as im awaiting AOS, EAD & AP i want to start working as soon as i have EAD but how can i apply for a SSN with EAD (when i get it) if they still have this application “in progress”...?

Sorry for the essay, just hoping for some guidance.

I appreciate it if you read the whole thing.

I think the current application is likely void because you are no longer eligible.

Manual verification is not a good thing because it can sit on somebody's desk and be forgotten about because the daily work of seeing applicants continues. They can dally before they send it off or neglect to process it after they get verification. Did she say why manual verification was needed? Did you apply in the exact name on the I-94?

When you get the EAD, wait long enough to let the SAVE database to be populated with your new status...authorized to work. Apply in the exact name as printed on the EAD card because that's the name that will be in the database. Your K1 entry name as on I-94 will be updated to a new immigration status and EAD name that they must find. Don't settle for manual verification. Wait on a supervisor if your worker can't help you.

You mentioned that you made calls. Have you ever gone to the SSA office in person?

Yes the once when i first applied - the lady who was “dealing” with my case gave me her direct work line (she was really helpful until I found out she hadnt passed it onto her colleague who “specialises in these cases?!”) & they told us not to come back to the office as they dont need anything from us.. i did say to my husband is it worth going there again & asking to speak to someone higher?! As were getting nowhere but its also been unessacery stress.

She said to me manual verification was “standard for K1 visa holders” LOL ive learnt more on these forums than they know...

Yep i know its void but i read somewhere on VJ they legally have to send me a denial letter, is that true?

So when i get my EAD, i go back to the office & apply from scratch again?! Im just worried my current SSN application will screw things up?

I would go back there in person again. In my experiences, it is always better to do this stuff face to face.

I don't know. If it is the responsibility of the lady that helped you or the person who sat on it 13 weeks, don't count on them suddenly getting a brain 😂🤣.

That's what I would do, but this time not in your K1 name, but the name on your EAD card. I am male and didn't change my surname, yet Social Security had to issue me a new physical card (not new SSN) when I went back to update after I became a permanent resident. My first card was issued in my K1 I-94 name like "John Brown".  My greencard said "John R. Brown" and they told me they had to give me a new card to match immigration.  And after my naturalisation, the certificate said "John Robert Brown". When I went to SS to update that I was a USC, they had to issue me a new card in my full name because that was how immigration had me listed. So yet another version of Social Security card.

Off topic, but the Texas DMV Issued me driver licenses in those name variations as well because they use the SAVE database and have to match the latest name USCIS calls you.

On my paperwork they gave me when i applied, it does state “if that office does not verify your documents, you are not eligible for a Social Secruity number card and we will inform you in writing.”

Ive said this before & ill say it again.. they are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Aslong as this doesnt affect me getting a SSN when i get EAD, then i will just give up, i cant be dealing chasing them every week when another worker keeps promising a call back on a certain day & they dont.

Thank you both for the advice!

As you probably know now, the person who handled your case when you applied originally was an idiot and did not handle things as they should. All you can do now is wait for your EAD and head back in with a new application. You should receive your SSN shortly thereafter.

Yes all the phone call to SSA just about waste the time

I am also applied SSN 2 weeks from my arrival. after waiting 4 weeks I tried to called them but they just say to wait. 6 weeks of waiting without any result, I decided to back to SSA office, i dont know what happened but the SSA officer ask another SSA officer about my case and i think they do some work in their computer and also ask me several times about EAD ( of course i dont have it) after 15 mins they gave me another receipt and ask me to wait another 3-4 weeks. I got the SSN just 2 weeks after.

So based on my experience its better to come to SSA office to follow up your case

Nothing was going keep me from getting my fiancée her SSN and I would have kept going to the SS office. The clerk who processed her application even told us to come back of the card didn’t arrive in 4 weeks. It arrived in 10 working days.
