driver's lisence expires when I-94 expires... what to do next?

hi guys 🙂

so I received my driver's license and it expires on the day my I-94 expires.

I asked the license office about that and they said that I can't renew it or have a new valid one (after this one expires) until I present my new papers that shows my new status.

so since I'm a k1 holder, I will be without a driver's license from the moment my I-94 expires until I get the green card which is like at least 8 months...

can anybody advice on this matter please?

Depending on the state you are in the US, you can use your foreign drivers license to drive for a year, i got here in August 25th 2018 and i have been driving since then with an African drivers license (Not international), so far i have been pulled over once and i presented it to the police and i was let go after he checked whatever he stopped me for (Car was new then and i didn't have a license plate)

I am in California though.

You may be able to use your I-485 receipt to be able to extend the validity of your DL beyond the expiration of your I-94. Some states will accept that as a legitimate document indicating status and some won't.

If not, you would need to wait until you received your EAD to be able to drive legally. I would remind you that driving without a license is a crime in every state.

EAD is what you need in most States.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I'm in Texas and when I went to get my driving license, they told me it would be valid only until my visa expires as shown on my I-94. Even when I showed my NOA-1, they where not accepting it.

After it expired I did some more research and came to the conclusion that I was supposed to be able to get a DL in Texas just with my I-797C. So I gathered evidence online about it and went again and this time they checked the lawful presence with my alien number and not with the number on the I-94. It took a few days and I received a letter saying that they checked my lawful presence and that I was eligible for a DL/ID card. I'm going again to the Texas DPS on Monday to get my DL renewed and I hope this time they won't be any issue!
