CAMPUS INSANITY: Students Fight Oppressive Ice Cream Marginalizing Muslims, Vegans

“Students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are taking action against discriminatory and marginalizing ice cream on campus, since some of the flavors use a beef gelatin.

 

Yes, we've become so far removed from reality on college campuses that students are now fighting against oppressive ice cream. Talk about First World problems.

 

Students have crafted legislation, titled "Ice Cream for All," demanding the ice cream at university-owned Babcock Dairy use more "inclusive" ingredients, thus ceasing the "marginalization" of "Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Vegetarian, and Vegan students."

I am more upset they now use walnuts instead of pistachios in my favorite flavor ice cream, just make equal but separate ice cream flavors, why do I need to eat the offal someone else prefers

Gelatin is not Kosher, which can be a problem for many people. It's one reason why a lot of major ice cream brands no longer use gelatin (instead favoring carrageenan), a few other makers of certain other products certify that their gelatin is made using different sources. Still some other companies do certify their beef type gelatin as Kosher. It's a debate that has been debated in the community for nearly 100 years.

 

It's kind of interesting when these 'news' articles get recycled... because the same exact thing happened way back when, because not all gelatin is even made with beef, some utilize pork which would be especially not Kosher (even when some rabbis would be previously lenient on the subject when using beef - even though it is not). From a personal standpoint I prefer that carrageenan instead of gelatin is used. Babcock (the ice cream maker in question) in particular utilized pork gelatin many years ago when the subject first came up. Certainly would not be suitable to be enjoyed by a variety of faiths. There are very obvious reasons why gelatin is not Kosher and why milk can be acceptable.
