Renewing drivers license now that I have a Green Card

Hey all

So I got my Green Card a couple of months ago and am going to the DMV this coming week to renew my drivers license - which expires on the 11th September. I've done a little bit of research and it seems that I was supposed to receive a couple of things in the mail, a camera card and an invitation to renew. I never received either of these things, so what is the process for getting my license renewed? Do I just go to the DMV with my green card, a check for $35 and say I want to renew? I'm in Pennsylvania if that helps any.

Thanks

Adam

I can't speak for your state, but in Texas, you would get a temporary paper license to use until receiving the actual card via the mail.  In Arkansas, they would produce the new DL while you wait.......

Awesome - sounds like there should be no down time between renewing it then!

Wow! Pennsylvania must be strict. I live in New Hampshire and all I had to do was walk into the DMV with my stamped passport (no green card yet) and they gave me a temporary drivers license. Plus the fee was just $10. You should just go and see what they say. Most likely they will renew with no issues whatsoever since you already have your green card.

Because of the Real ID changes, all states/territories are getting stricter. Same with NH for K1 Visa (like OP); https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/driver-licensing/non-us-citizen/permanent.htm:

Immigration Status

Must provide an original Social Security Card and one of the following:

  • Valid I-94 departure card indicating refugee or asylee status.
  • Valid passport, visa and I-551 stamp with at least sixty (60 days) left before expiration.
  • Valid permanent resident card or valid employment authorization card (EAD) issued by the Bureau of Citizenship & Immigration Services (BCIS) with at least sixty (60 days) left before expiration.

In your case, @IndigoPhantom, you presented a "Valid passport, visa and I-551 stamp with at least sixty (60 days) left before expiration." You were a LPR upon US entry. OP was not.

Also, not sure if you already have the real ID license yet, but I would take proof of your address also. Utility bill, bank statement, mortgage or lease papers, unless you have done that already. If nothing has changed on your license, PA allows you to renew online also, but I think you have to be over 18, and a US citizen to renew online.

PA says new license is $35 and renewal is $30.50?  In my state they do it per year so it was less as the green card validity was only for two years. But PA''s website seems pretty thorough on the fees so I'm *guessing* that's not an option.

Each state is different. California, for example, does not require a fee to renew a "limited-term" DL or ID, but Illinois does.

Also, not sure if you already have the real ID license yet

Real ID is not an option in PA until March 2019. The Pennsylvania REAL ID Compliance Act (Act 3 of 2017) repealed Act 38 of 2012 (see the last page of this PDF), which prohibited Pennsylvania from participating in the federal Real ID Act of 2005. Act 3 of 2017 also creates a two-ID system to allow consumers to choose a driver's license or non-driving identification card that is not compliant with Real ID. https://www.dmv.pa.gov/Pages/REAL-ID-Frequently-Asked-Questions.aspx:

Quote

Why did PennDOT wait so long to begin the REAL ID process?

Until May 2017, Pennsylvania law prohibited PennDOT from complying with the federal REAL ID Act. Act 3 of 2017 repealed this prior legislation and allowed PennDOT to seek REAL ID compliance. PennDOT anticipates that REAL ID-compliant documents will be available at the customer's option by Spring 2019.

But @Adam&Allison can "pre-verify" for REAL ID:

Quote

How can I pre-verify for REAL ID?

You may bring the required REAL ID documentation to any PennDOT driver license center. PennDOT staff will image the documents to your record, and when REAL IDs are available in March 2019, you can opt into the REAL ID program online, and your REAL ID product will be sent through the mail, eliminating any need for you to return to a Driver License Center.

If you received your first Pennsylvania learner's permit, driver's license or photo ID after September 1, 2003, you are eligible to apply for REAL ID pre-verification online. Visit our Online Pre-Verification page for more information on this process.
