Hello to all of you here in this process of K-1:

After waiting endlessly for our Social security number, my wife got hers. It took manual verification and 3 visits to the SSA office to get it. One month just to get it. I am not going to say it is always like this, because some other k-1 had it in as little as 10 days, and others have waited up to 8 WEEKS for it also. The reason for this comment is that I couldn't put my wife on my health insurance at work and i ended up paying dearly at a Urgent care for a visit and meds. Do yourself a favor!!!

1) The following day of POE, get you I-94 online

2) Apply for Social security as soon as you can. Make an appointment at SSA and you will not be waiting for at least 30 minutes, like we did.

3) Do not let the manual verification scare you. It happens.

4) Do not wait for the SAVE website to be correct. We where unlucky and went from not being even on the website, to sent back to agency, to not being on the website, to case being reviewed twice to finally sent back to SSA in Maryland. SSA doesn't even know what the SAVE website is. Somewhere in VJ there is this outdated idea to wait for 14 days and not get manual verification. Non-sence!

5)  After SS#, get married, find officiant, get few marriage certificates and file AOS, highly recommended. The line is long to get EAD/AP and wedding ceremonies can wait.

Good luck on all of you guys waiting. We are doing Biometrics in 2 days.

So you can apply for a social security number right away? I thought that was something you get after you get through the AOS process and receive a greencard?

As far as the SAVE website goes, what does that stand for and what is it exactly? And what do you mean by manual verification?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to follow the steps you suggest.

First, thanks for reading this post and asking questions...

Yes, under the K-1 rules, you are allowed to get SS# right away. I highly recommend to do this because you will get a chance to start building credit, spouse has access to be on your bank account added for AOS purposes and many more things like health insurance .  We are getting ours delivered today in the mail. I use informed delivery.

https://save.uscis.gov/CaseCheck/CaseCheck.aspx is the website to check when Social security has had their record of I-94 and more verified by USCIS. Short explanation: You provide documents to your local SSA and they verify them with USCIS, i believe. They do this and once it is ready, they send approval back to SSA and they issue a SS# to the beneficiary.

Hope this clarifies any questions and as always Good luck to you.

Thanks! I did not realize that you had to have a SS# prior to putting a spouse on your medical insurance at work.

So just to clarify, I need to make sure I get a SS# before getting married (quick courthouse visit) correct? A formal marriage can wait.

It's not required. Maybe the OP's work is being a #### about it (in which case it may not be worth it for him to press the issue with HR), but many intending immigrants obtain health insurance without an SSN. It just may take some prodding.

Ah, okay, I'll double check with my employer to see what their requirements are.

Nonetheless I'll still apply for the SS# asap after my fiance arrives at the POE.

You are correct, by formal I meant an actual larger celebratory wedding.

Thanks!

Yes, the social security is a problem at work. The such beloved BC/BS is no good anyhow and does require a SS# with my employer. Even the credit union wouldn't allow my wife to add her. Some credit cards didn't allow her to add her either. The list of where you need social security # is endless in rural Alabama and even more is EAD is required for DL also.

Getting social security before marriage is done for name changing purposes. First you need to have a valid i-94 and at least 2 weeks left in validity. Second is the beneficiary is taking your name, do it before you get married because I have read they challenge you name change in SSA office and won't allow you to get SS# then because they cannot verify your documents. Married name is different than on the passport, hence the problem.
