Crossing the Canada/US land border with Advance Parole

Hi folks,

I have an Advance Parole/EAD card (adjusting to permanent residency through marriage), and I'm planning to visit Canada for a few days. I'll be driving through one of the land borders, and wanted to know - does anyone have any recent experience with handling the land border entry/exit with an AP?

Am I supposed to show my AP to anyone on the US side before I leave the US and enter Canada? Or is it just something I should be careful about when I'm re-entering the US? I also have a non-immigrant visa in my passport and I am nervous that could make the entry process confusing.

Do people with AP always get called into secondary inspection at the land border? I'm never had secondary inspection so it sounds a little scary.

It would be really helpful to know what to expect! Thank you!

Advance Parole is for entering the US.

Use your EAD/AP along with your passport to get back into the US. No need to show it to anyone on the way out. You'll probably enter secondary inspection which might take an hour or two - the main purpose is to make sure it is not fake, is still valid, you don't have a disqualifying criminal conviction, and otherwise are admissable. Remember, only US Citizens are guaranteed entry to the US but if you don't pose a national security risk you will be fine.

Of course they are. This is incredibly basic. They may take a USC straight to jail if they are a threat to national security or whatever but they are guaranteed entry. Common sense, where would they get deported to?

Yes, US citizens are guaranteed entry into the United States........that is an unbelievably incorrect statement to make.

Just repeating what my congressmen aid told me. I found it strange also.

What Senator told you that?

He's wrong. Most Americans don't know much about their own immigration law tbh. Again, this is a basic and well-established fact. Don't go around spreading "fake news" please

I don't KNOWINGLY spread "Fake News"....I was merely repeating what my congressman's aid told me. This was in another conversation that does not pertain to OP subject.

Don't shoot the messenger!!!!

And your very correct that most people on here do not know their own immigration law.

What is your country of citizenship?  You might need a visa to enter Canada by land [you can check here: canada.ca/visit]- LPRs can present their Permanent resident cards for land entry , however you are not yet a Permanent resident.
