I can go along with this. It will help end fraud for sure. No more EBT for fast food now tou have to cook it yourself.

  • A proposed food delivery program would replace about half of food stamp benefits for households who qualify for the boxes.
  • The plan would put the U.S. government directly in charge of what goes on the dinner plates of more than 16 million low-income households.
  • Critics say the program would be inefficient and costly, and would end up reducing benefits for low-income families and communities.

Still leaves room for fraud and of course would be costly.  I thought republicans were advocates of less government control, now they want to decide what people eat for dinner??

a very fraud laden system.  I hear almost weekly people talking about paying 50 cents and using peoples ebt

Once again a proposal I'm torn on.

Pros:

May eliminate fraud.

Could be expanded upon to get businesses involved to reduce waste even.

May be a way to hire local farmers and suppliers to directly provide products to the box.

May promote healthier eating if done right (but government rarely does much right so...).

Cons:

Will without a doubt cut into big business + food industry lobby that make $$$$$$s off of people coming in with their EBT and SNAP. Already they are yelling about it.

Once you cut into that, it does have a trickle down cause and effect, likely in the negative. Less money coming in = less profits = less pay for workers in a variety of connected sectors.

May ultimately save some money but may go up later. There's no studies about the impact of this, and I'd like to see some independent research on the subject.

Is the government effectively telling someone what they can and cannot eat and it would create and grow a massive new bureaucracy to do so. Sorry... libertarian in me sees red flags everywhere.

We don't know what contents would be selected. Are they going to be low quality choices because low quality = cheaper?

How do they address families with special dietary restrictions and considerations?

How does it get delivered?

It's creating more regulation instead of fixing the current regulation which always costs something in the long run.

Food lobby will then likely attempt to get kickbacks and sweet deals to make sure their products get in the box over competition.

After more research it doesn't sound like it would benefit local farmers or reducing grocers food waste - all products would be virtually canned goods - even meat and milk. This would definitely not promote healthier eating - as canned goods are full of preservatives, chemicals, and salt. A person that is poor and utilizes the current benefits honestly and fairly, may use their benefits to purchase healthy choices such as fresh fruit and veg, milk, and meat. This would significantly if not completely eliminate the ability to do that.

I agree canned food is not great and not as healthy as fresh food. But it's certainly healthy than BK, Hardees, or any other fast food that caters to food stamp recipients like they do in CA. I have also seen atms in CA that accept ebt as well. Which is crazy in my mind.

Hardly going to hurt any business. The food still has to be grown, processed and delivered by people.  Hurting the food lobby. Boo Hoo

If you think people are using EBT benefits to eat more healthy, I have some swampland in Florida for sale. I think they would not longer be able to sell or swap benefits for Beer, Cigarettes and hair dos or sell them at 50 cents on the dollar to buy dope.

Not in my neck of the woods... and believe me.... as infuriating as I've seen some things happen with those using them, never seen that. I'm looking at this at the perspective of remembering my parent's struggles way back in the day (and the sister that's the black sheep of the family tbh) there are plenty that do make honest use of their cash allotment. I'm just not comfortable with the government telling someone what they cannot eat and providing options that clearly aren't good. I could see this program becoming bloated and full of lobbyists. Again I believe in fixing current regulation as a better way forward for now. Though I don't think it's a totally bad idea outright, if healthier options were given.

The FMI and NGA is already complaining so I hear and so is Walmart (Walmart will likely have the most pull in nixing this idea tbh). Not saying there isn't abuse man, but a poor person shouldn't be told they need to eat beans + chemicals simply because they are poor when they previously could have fresh food or milk just as anyone else. There's an enormous amount waste going on. The grocery industry wastes about $15B and 43B pounds of food a year in perfectly good products they don't sell. Some places have donations programs, but mostly they just can't be bothered.

There are some programs in Europe and a few non-profits in the US that take this food and use it to feed the poor, it would be great if the government could help incentivize greater philanthropy like that, tighten up restrictions and fraud (pretty obvious how to fix that), and promote helping the poor in ways that would benefit everyone involved.

It doesn't happen in NC either for either one of those but it does happen in CA. When my mother came out to Pasadena last year when we lived there she was amazed by that and how many fast food places openly advocate for EBT holders to come there. They have signs saying "EBT accepted here" on the outside of the place.

I dont have any problem with Govt telling people whats on the menu, when my tax dollars are footing the bill. If you want to make your own choices spend your won money.

The program is a fraud ridden pig, and needs to be changed

Our taxes all collectively go toward something we won't use or don't like at some point you know? But if we're going to help people, I'd rather my tax dollars go to providing good and nutritious choices. A can of spam isn't it. Ultimately the more unhealthy people we have, we all end up paying for it again. I want less government in our lives and dictating our choices, not more.

The USDA has studied this... and they do buy fresh meat, milk, and produce. Yes many still do make unhealthy choices. This plan would eliminate any healthy choices at all.

Want me to show you the government study?

Previously some conservatives had wanted to change the program to healthy items only, eliminating any and all ways of buying junk food and saving quite a lot of government money in the process.
