How many folks going to Public Universities do not get what they pay for?

I went to public universities for both undergrad and graduate school.

You have to pay per a credit. I was reviewing the classes I was required to take as general education credits for undergrad (Dance, art class, ancient history, literature classes about off the wall topics) and had a good laugh of the 10s of thousands of dollars I was required to spend on these classes in order to meet general education degree requirements for the University. As an adult I wish I could have streamlined my education into less than 7 years but not with the current way US education systems are set up.

Sure, we are programmed to think of Universities as bastions of higher learning, but in reality, they are really just places that are trying to get money.  Private universities get a lot more flack, but they are pretty much all the same.  I do wonder, not being an attorney, are public universities immune from lawsuits like the ones filed against private universities (i.e. not getting anything for their money)?

I agree, it is up to the individual to determine what is best for them, but there are plenty of University counselors that really represent the U and not the student, and do everything they can to keep the money coming in.

I think the bigger issue is that kids(and there parents) are in a mad rush to get accepted into something. I'm not sure there's a huge reason to rush into something that is going to determining the course for the rest of your life.

I took 3 years off after high school and gave a lot of thought to what I wanted to do and what I needed. Three years was probably too long, but a couple of months is not enough time. Unless you are absolutely certain that you know what you want, and even then, it wouldn't hurt to think about it one more time.

That is very true indeed. But my thing is how a lot of colleges both private and public are pushing people to sign up for XXXX amount of loans just to fill their coffers. All the while the student is left with a huge debt that he/she may not be able to pay off for a long time if at all.

Take away federally subsidized student loans (basically available to anyone) and you will see schools decreasing tuition fees and ridiculous academic programs disappear.

Right now the market is drugged because of the unlimited amounts of student loans available. and dumb kids (and parents) fall for it. And then they end up with a liberal art degree, $200k of student loan debt and no job. And they complain and ask for forgiveness.

The way student loans are set up and pushed is a monstrosity. It's another thing that kids coming out of high school don't have the means to evaluate. I hate a system that pushes debt on people that don't really even understand what it means to pay a bill or budget for themselves yet.

Completely agree with you on this. Do you know if pigs are flying yet????

I didn't realize what a big debt that credit cards can be until it took me 8 years to pay them off from when I got them at the age of 18 with a $8k limit.

Agreed. I am tied to my job for over 12 years because of my student loans. I am never allowed to work anything but full time because of student loan agreements and work between 1 and 2 PRN positions so I can live a good life and still pay my loans. But I am grateful PRN positions are so easy to find and I actually do enjoy my job.

When I was 19 years old, I couldn't comprehend loans. I am lucky enough that I had a full scholarship my first 4 years (My parents forced my to go to the school with a full scholarship and I cried that they didn't give me a choice. Now I am thankful they forced me.) but graduate school was not cheap.

OK, let's not go overboard. Regular Universities are not paying off people to drop lawsuits over their degree's.

It's really up to each individual to make sure their degree is going to take them where they want to go. If you wan't to make sure you always have a job, study for a degree that does that. If you wan't to study classical literature, that's fine too, just understand where you can go with that degree

That's true, but people get misinformed too. Yesterday at a meeting the lady from university X had a shiny professionals looking sheet with degrees and potential jobs. The way she explained the sheet was: this are the jobs you will able to do with your degree. Young students who don't have that much life experience take that as being a fact. They think: ok if I do X+Y it will get me to Z.

I was sitting next to a young man, I asked him what he was studying for. He wasn't sure yet, but his father had his own construction business, and he would help him 2/3 days a week. I said, if I may give you an advice: if you like working with your hands and you enjoy your work on those days, stick with it. Don't get yourself into debt just to get a vague piece of paper.

You reminded me of the torture of the humanities courses I had to take. Look, I enjoy learning about Greek philosophy but do I really have to write multiple  20+ page reports on it???

We even had a classmate that had a breakdown during a study session. True story! He went on a long rant about, "How the heck is this going to help me in real life!!!"

And this was not me complaining just stating the reality getting and education and not realizing the reality of what loans will mean to you in the long run.   Luckily I was at least smart enough to only take out federal loans.

I had a classical dance class for one of my courses and it was awful. I seriously sat through a couple classes of it then dropped the class and choose World Mythology instead.

Haha. As a 34 year old adult I am actually kind of bitter I was required to take these classes and it cost thousands of dollars to take these courses.

I studied Latin in high school in Italy (it was and still is mandatory for technical HS) and it has dramatically helped me with languages, even non-latin languages. It was so easy to learn Russian for me because I studied Latin.

So some subjects are annoying during schools but they help afterwards in real life.

I am not sure if taking a Latin class can be compared to a Physical Therapist having to take a figure drawing class. Haha.

I actually regret not taking more languages.... which actually was NOT required for my undergrad degree (but yes drawing was). Now how I wish it was required so I could talk to my Spanish speaking patients without an interpreter being required!
