Some countries take respect for their nation a bit more seriously than we do, it seems.

”Bayle Einstein Gonzales, 20, attended a screening of the superhero film last weekend at an IMAX theater in Angeles City, Pampanga.

When the national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, began playing, Gonzales reportedly did not stand, as required by the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines.

Philippine diplomat Elmer Cato, who sat behind Gonzales, asked twice to stand.

Gonzales continued to sit and eat popcorn.

After the film, Cato asked officers to arrest Gonzales.

In a Facebook post on Nov. 17, Cato wrote, “I just could not let this disrespect pass. My blood still boiling.”

Given the human rights violations and extra judicial justice being dispensed by the current Philippines regime, I don't think their current state of civil rights is something I'd want to see emulated here.

You mean like drug dealers actually having to fear REAL consequences, as opposed to the slaps on the wrists they get over here?

No, I mean like police and vigilante groups picking their victims and dispensing "justice" without verifying whether they are actually guilty or not. Selling drugs is a crime; I think murder also is. Makes no sense to endorse one to eliminate the other, especially in a country that has legally abolished the death penalty. The end does not justify the means

How long have you lived there, and has the QoL gone up or down in the past 2-3 years?

Druggies are druggies, and need to be dealt with.  Seems like Duterte has done that.

I noticed you didn’t answer my question.  Am I to assume all you know is what you hear on the news?  Or do you have actual experience living there?

You are trying to defend QoL by justifying extrajudicial killings without a trial. Sorry, I thought your question was rhetorical, because really, who cares. Martial law made life better for some under Marcos too. For many, like my fathers second wife it got much worse.

As far as I hear though, life is again, better for some and worse for others. Which means jack to me. My father and his wife will be spending January and February in the PI, as they do every year, so if you need a more personal update on the situation,  you'll have to wait till then. Regardless, for the 17 year old that got set up and murdered by police, for the 4 year old girl who got killed by a vigilante's bullet, what does QoL means to them?

No need to wait.  I just got back from there.  And by and large, people support the hard line their president has taken.

Any loss of innocent life is sad, but there will always be collateral damage.  It sucks, but it is reality.  You failed to ask about the hundreds of women and children killed by the drug lords and Abu Sayef the past few years.  It surely sucked for this innocents as well.  I'm sure their families are enjoying increased safety and QoL.

I'm not saying Duterte's methods are perfect.  But they ARE effective.

Why not? The left applauded the 8 years of wanton abuse of essential liberty here under Obama.

So no appreciation of essential liberty gold star sticker for you then. :(

He took the city of Davo from one of the most dangerous places on earth to one of the safest as mayor. Hard to not like that
