How often can boyfriend visit me a year and for how long can he stay?

Hello I am from America and my boyfriend is from Sweden. What visa will allow him to visit America for a lengthy period of time (three months) and then return again after a short period of time in Sweden? And how often can he do this per year? Thank you. :)

He can visit up to 90 days (not the same as three months) under the visa waiver program - assuming he is eligible.

 

There is no rule regarding how often or how much time between visits, but the VWP is for visiting the USA, not living here and making occasional short trips to Sweden. What job does he have that would allow so much time off? If he spends too long in the USA he not only becomes of interest to the IRS but he also risks being denied entry under suspicion of abusing the VWP by living here.

I believe it's technically 90 days of any 6 month period. If you visit frequently, for long periods, it could become an issue and get denied entry. Luckily, Sweden has great vacation allowances for him to visit :)

We have a lot of allowances - but not 90 days :lol:

My guess from the term "boyfriend" is he is young and either before Uni, staying at parents or taking time off or quitting a job that's not his future career path anyways. Ofc he could also be older and have his own company, but I'll give that some lower odds :D

A good rule of thumb is to spend at least as much time outside the US as inside. I.e. if your boyfriend visits for 90 days (max under VWP), he should stay in Sweden for 90 days.

 

FYI for your boyfriend, his Swedish home insurance only covers traveling for 45 days. If he’s traveling outside EU for more than 45 days, he’ll need to purchase additional travel insurance to cover illness, accidents etc.

Good point.. :) my mom put me on hers and added 3 months for me when I first came over just until everything was settled here.

Even if he has 90 days per visit with the ESTA, it's probably more prudent to leave a few days before those 90 days. Planning to leave on day 90 is risky if his flight was delayed and he unintentionally overstayed by a day. That's enough to have his ESTA "taken away" and he'll need to apply for a B2 in the future.

 

Additionally, frequent visits and frequent long stays (with short intervals) might raise some eyebrows at the POE and his entries might be scrutinized. Don't mean to be a party p-oper but wanna make sure that you guys are careful when planning his visits :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

It wasn't stated that he couldn't afford the air fare. I never thought all this detail would really matter, but I suppose you two are just curious anyway. I'm paying for all his tickets. I can afford to do so.
