I haven't read all of the pages of commentary. I'll just give my opinion.

 

I think BART's reasoning is flawed, but I do agree with them that they shouldn't release the surveillance vidoes. I'm sure they have shared the videos with the proper authorities. Anything beyond that is unnecessary. Not because it would create an "unnecessary stereotype" or whatever, but just because it is unnecessary. The public don't "need" to see the videos, and they don't have a right to the videos. Police can use them in their investigation and that is that.

 

I will go against type though and say again that I think their reasoning is silly. Facts are facts. While I don't like "unnecessary bias" or stereotypes, unfortunately in these situations the facts may be that all 40 teenagers were black. If people want to report that, so be it. They aren't creating stereotypes, they are just reporting facts. BART has no responsibility though to release that information if they don't want to, no matter what their reasoning is. They have to cooperate with police, not media.
