Venezuelan President’s Claims of Helicopter Attack Contested

CARACAS, Venezuela—President Nicolás Maduro said a helicopter dropped grenades on the Supreme Court on Tuesday in a terror attack, though opposition figures called his claims a diversion orchestrated to deflect from the government’s attempts to neuter state institutions outside its control.

Mr. Maduro said he had activated “the entire armed forces,” after announcing on state television that four grenades were dropped from a small blue helicopter that officials said was piloted by a rogue policeman.

No one was injured and there were no signs of damage.

 

The announcement came as soldiers surrounded the opposition-controlled congress, clashing with lawmakers. The soldiers carried in boxes of equipment, which opposition congressmen said was a prelude to a government takeover of the building ahead of next month’s plans to rewrite the constitution.

Opposition lawmakers tried to remain defiant, with Julio Borges, among the more prominent of Mr. Maduro’s foes, telling reporters, “Neither bullets, threats or attacks will throw us out of here.”

Meanwhile, the government-controlled court late Tuesday published a decision that gave investigative powers to the human-rights ombudsman, a close ally of the president. That potentially allows officials to usurp the powers of Attorney General Luisa Ortega, who had in recent weeks grown critical of the government and pledged to investigate corruption.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Maduro threatened civil war if the opposition were to attempt to remove the government, suggesting violence even if the change came through elections.

“We would never give up, and what couldn’t be done with votes, we would do with weapons,” he said at a rally.

The president has called a July 30 vote for a special assembly with powers to redraft the constitution, which opponents say with do away with last vestiges of Venezuelan democracy. The opposition and ruling party dissidents such as Ms. Ortega, the attorney general, have vowed to boycott and fight the elections, which they say are unlawful.

I am just relating what Maduro himself said.  Gotta believe a democratically elected leader even if he is a socialist.  Sounds pretty democratic to me.

i fail to see the correlation, but i've a basic understanding of what democratic socialism is.

Wasn't Chavez elected as a socialist revolution in Venezuela democratically?  This all seems to fit the bill of what I have read from the DSA.  Now that is has spiraled down to a totalitarian regime is somewhat predictable and history tells us this.  Heck, look at how the EU government is starting to assert itself to gather more power.

I did read the DSA site.  It was a hoot, but of course I have a wide knowledge of history.

I was reading a bit more on this and apparently the pilot of the helicopter was also a part time actor.  Many are saying this is a stunt by the Venezuelan president.  Definitely possible.

This reminds me of the Fake Turkish Coup last year to help solidify Edrogan's reign.

I don't believe the coup was fake. Sadly, it failed, and I feel really bad for the thousands paying the price for it now.

Who knows.  Totalitarians trying anything to stay in power can do some pretty stupid things.  Maduro is set to re-write their constitution to get rid of any opposition in their National Assembly, he has stripped the AG of any power, and has stacked their Supreme Court.  Why not a little fake coup to try and get  some sympathy?

I believe that a large number of the lower ranking officers thought it was real but overall I do believe it was faked. I think that because there is a fair number of things that anyone with commonsense would do to successfully pull off a coup. The first thing would be to cut off all communications systems so that your opposition can't rally back, just like what actually happened.

Starving Venezuelans Haul Off Vending Machines in Mass Looting Attack



Photos from inside Venezuela have shown people participating in mass looting as a means of survival, including stealing entire vending machines and carrying them through the streets.

The recent bout of looting took place this week in Maracay, the capital of Aragua state, with images showing men carrying vending machines as well as what appears to be a refrigerator down a road with the aid of motorbikes.

 

Other images show people emptying supermarkets, bakeries, butcher shops and pharmacies of their products, as well as setting fires and smoke bombs as people run through the streets.

“The serious situation continues in various areas of #Maracay, people looting fridges to alcohol in various stores,” photojournalist Andrews Abreu wrote on Twitter.
