Filing N400 online, anyone?

Fingers crossed for you, I don't think my case is particularly complex compared to others but I still get nervous when I see a USCIS notification in my inbox. Glad that things are moving along! If it helps, I think I filed my ROC on July 31st so it was basically August by the time they received it.

Hi Everyone,

 

This might have already been asked or answered, but I was wondering, for those who applied online using the 3-year marriage to US citizen basis, did you have to put in your residence/work information for the past 5 years? Or were you able to apply online by only inputting your 3 year residence/work info? I just wanted to make sure before I submit my application.

Just to clarify this statement for @Motorcity0214----you CAN travel even though your physical green card has expired---you do NOT need to get this renewed---so long as you get an i-551 stamp (which is done for free through an infopass appointment) in your foreign passport, which gives you proof of status for up to one year and allows you to travel/re-enter the US just as an unexpired greencard would.

 

Keep in mind, if you wait until AFTER your green card is expired to get this stamp---they will then tell you to renew the GC and pay the fee.  So you'll want to make sure you get the stamp before then if your card is ready to expire.

 

I would encourage you to get the stamp in your passport (BEFORE the green card expires so there is no fee) as a precaution incase you do end up having to travel for emergency purposes----things happen, you never know....

Yes, I applied online.  When you enter your  history and click next, it will come up with a notice saying it can see you haven’t entered 5 years worth of info, but then you can just click next again and it will allow you to continue.

 

(for example under employment all I entered was ‘unemployed’ from my POE date 11/01/15 to sometime in Jan 2016 and then entered my job from then to now)

I may have to be out of the country for work for a 1.5 months and that coincides with the initial 90 day window I can apply for N400. I live in the US and just happen to be traveling during that week. Is it saying that I cannot apply online? I could not find any other documentation elaborating more on this? I wonder if that statement goes along with the first statement about applying based on military service...Thought... anyone?

The reference you highlighted is for someone who is not a legal permanent resident residing in the US when they make the application (ie they are living in another country outside the USA, not visiting another country like you are).

 

You should be able to file online. If they schedule anything while you are traveling out of the city where you live or out of the country, you can contact the USCIS and reschedule the appointment.

I'll be filing online within the next week or so. The application itself is already complete and the studying for the test has begun, I just need to gather additional documents to support my case.

 

Any advice for a 5 year, like what additional documents to provide? Is there a checklist I can refer to?

 

I have:

- Front/back copy of my Green Card

- Copy of marriage license

- Copy of divorce decree

- Copy of Deed Poll for name change when I was 12

- Tax returns since 2014

- Most recent paystubs from all 3 current jobs I'm working

- Lease agreement(s)

- Credit report

- Maybe like 6 or 7 letters of endorsement from people I know

 

What else should I add?

What else should I add?

For five year filers, the only required document is a copy of the front and back of your green card.  You are filing based on your residence, not your marriage or employment.

 

The IO *may* ask to see the copy of the final divorce decree, perhaps to determine your initial GC/ROC was properly approved, but your marital status is irrelevant to adjudicating your N400 based on the 5-year eligibility.

 

The stuff regarding your employment, letters from friends/relatives, paystubs and credit report won't even be considered.
