Hey everyone..I been thinking of traveling to Ireland in March for a week with my wife and 2 kids..I have my out of date Green Card and 2 extension letter ..The last one saying for 18 months ..Im flying out of Orlando ..By what i been reading here ..its all that i need ...do i need to ring USCIS and tell them and if so do i need a letter from them ??...Thank you.

All you need is to take your expired green card and the original 2nd extension letter (A copy will guarantee secondary inspection and the boarding agent in Ireland may also have a problem accepting it as proof of status).

If by the time of your trip you still don't have an Extension Letter, then you should make an Infopass appointment and get your passport stamped with I-551.

Make a copy of your green card - very often it's kept by USCIS Office in exchange for the stamp, but you never know until you are there :)

Have a safe trip and hopefully your Ext.Letter arrives soon.

You are very welcome :)

Sure, you can get your passport stamped with I-551 if you haven't received an Ext.Letter  and you need to travel internationally, or to re-new your Driver License, or an employer wants to see a proof of your residency...

Just don't leave the US without either one  - the stamp in the passport or a "combo" of an expired green card +Ext.Letter.

Good luck!!

Anyone here got I-551 stamp from the LA field office recently? I tried to make an infopass appt online but it says they don't take walk-in or appt.

I have an expired GC with 18 extension letter, which are sufficient and I just wanted to get the stamp in case i need to travel after my letter expires.

Thanks in advance!

My conditional green card will expired April 2019. Going on a trip in February.

Question is:

If I file ROC in January, can I still travel using my green card in Feb?

If I wait to file ROC after my trip in February, can I still get in the country with my green card?

Thank you !

1/12/2019: 90- ROC filing window open
1/17/2019: Mail I-751 Package via USPS Certified Mail
1/22/2019: Package arrived
1/28/2019: Receive case number via text message  #WACxxxxxxxxxx
2/21/2019: Call USCIS for non-delivery notice receipt
2/29/2019: Receive 18-month extension letter (2 pages)
4/30/2019: Biometric Appt
...waiting...

Hello all - I'm reporting on my spouse's experience flying with the 18-month extension letter this week from Budapest-Amsterdam-Detroit. We flew KLM and Delta.

No one asked for the green card and letter at Budapest. In Amsterdam he had an additional passport verification step at the gate and also showed his green card and letter. The agent was more focused on the passport and was aware of what the letter was. Easy peasy.

We have Global Entry so went to the kiosks in Detroit. We knew he would have to talk with the passport control folks and got directed to the front of the line (no extra waiting!) to talk with an officer. He was asked what he brought back from the trip and where he was coming from, the officer looked at the letter and green card and sent him through. Took maybe 5 extra minutes and we were on our way.

I always hold my breath when we have to go through immigration but no problems so far!

Good to hear another case! I have global entry as well but my GC was taken by USCIS so I wasn't sure how to proceed. I only have a stamp... Did you attempt to get a printout or scan at the machine at all, or just went straight to the officer? Did you bring your global entry card?

Hi all, just wanted to let you guys know that yesterday I came back from overseas. I was travelling from Poland to Chicago via LOT Arlines. I had no issues travelling with expired green card and extension letter.

At the check in in Poland, the guy was looking at my GC for couple of minutes so before he said anything I gave him my letter. Then he started making calls, but he could not get through so I told him that his supervisor should be familiar with that document. Then he announced that he is familiar with it, but he still needs to report it to the immigration department. He told them on the phone that I have expired green card and the letter. He confirmed the type of document and that it is 18 month extension. Then I was good to go. I didn't have to show it again.

At Chicago there was a long line for passport control so I asked where should I go. They sent me to the expressed line. I gave him everything right away, he read the entire letter and asked me how long I was in Poland (4 weeks),  if  I visited family (yes) where is my husband (Colorado) and why I didn't bring him with (Told him he could  not take that much time off work). After those answers I was good to go.

Everything was pleasant and not stressful or intimidating
