Yeah, me either. The last couple times my wife and I traveled they were offering $300-400 because they were overbooked and of course we didn't take it. We usually need to be where we need to be and that's it.

I kind of hope to get bumped whenever we're on the way back from Hawaii. I'd probably agree to do it for just for the free accommodations. No luck so far though.

As a side note , the next stop was only 4 hour drive. United could have got them a rental car.

Actually, I might have taken the $800 bucks and rented a car. Especially if I didn't have any checked luggage. The flight probably took almost that long after the delay anyway.

He purchased his ticket was allowed to board & seated,  United needed 4 seats for

employees who had to dead-head to work, after 3 volunteers were offered a free

ticket within the US & $800 (they claims) they were no more takers, the computer

picked his name, he advise them he had a surgery the next morning & would not

leave then 3 strongarm were brought aboard who proceed to drag this man by his

feet down the aisle, as passengers took pics

He should sue them out of the sky & will

They could have upped the offer as other airlines do & they would have a taker, cheaper

than a lawsuit due to their incopetence

I stand by my trespasser theory...and honestly United should hire me for PRor something if it turns out to be true 😂😂

I don't think the next few weeks would be a great time to start employment with United's PR department.

When airlines must involuntarily bump, there are rules to follow.

Passengers must get to their final destination within one hour -- or carriers have to start coughing up money.

If fliers get to their final destination one to two hours late (or one to four hours late if they're flying internationally), airlines are required to pay double the original one-way fare, with a $675 limit. If fliers get in more than two hours late (or four internationally), airlines have to pay 400% of the one-way fare, up to a $1,350 limit.

United offered passengers up to $1,000 to de-board the Sunday flight, according to an internal e-mail from CEO Oscar Munoz.

I just saw it on TV. A fellow passenger was interviewed.  He said the fuzz was cool at first,  until the passenger became very agitated and started slapping them away.

As charmander said, I bet the flight crew add was last minute.

Poor choices the way United handled it .

Security guard is not the fuzz..

I had a buddy in college that used to live to get bumped.  I used to regularly pick him up from the airport as he came back from visiting his family out East and I always knew I would get a call about two hours before he was scheduled to arrive the first time to let me know he was coming in later or the next day.

Personally, I generally would not take a bump especially on an outbound flight as I usually need to be where I am going.  I might consider it on a homebound flight depending on the circumstances.

My ex and I volunteered to be bumped off a flight from Raleigh, NC to Boston back in the late 90's with the now defunct Midway Airlines. The payoff was two free round trip tickets anywhere Midway flew that must be used within one year of the original flight date. It worked out great because we only had to wait 3 hours for the next flight and we had a trip to Florida planned in 8 months that we hadn't purchased tickets for yet. We went to an airport restaurant, had a nice lunch and a few drinks while waiting for our new flight.

I remember things like this when I was younger. Not only would they rebook you, they would also give you free airfare. It was quite popular and people actually "hoped" to get bumped.

I'm sure if the flight was on some random day there would have been people itching to take 800-1000 dollars to take the next flight. It was a bit of a "perfect storm" with United needing the seats on the last flight on a Sunday night. Of course people have work the next day, and of course they don't/can't miss that so you are going to have a much harder time getting people off.

I agree with you. It is pretty much the only way to "spin it" from the United standpoint. It's a pretty weak argument, but it's all they have.

My sister and husband usually book a day ahead of their real plans and hope to get bumped. They are retired and just travelling so getting bumped usually means an extra vacation during the year. As for United,  they aren't my favorites after the mess when my mom died.  They arrived late to the first stop and tried to not get me on the second leg until after my mothers funeral, lost my luggage to boot. Found it the day I was returning home and lost it again on the return flight.  They must make a fortune hiring imbeciles.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
