A Trump administration thaw with Russia is ‘unacceptable,’ McCain says

Sen. John McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, sent his first shot across the bow of President-elect Donald Trump’s national security plans Tuesday, saying that any attempt to “reset” relations with Russia is unacceptable.

“With the U.S. presidential transition underway, Vladimir Putin has said in recent days that he wants to improve relations with the United States,” McCain (R-Ariz.) said in a statement released by his office.

“We should place as much faith in such statements as any other made by a former KGB agent who has plunged his country into tyranny, murdered his political opponents, invaded his neighbors, threatened America’s allies and attempted to undermine America’s elections,” he said.

McCain gave tepid support to Trump after the Republican nominating convention, then withdrew it in October after the leak of a 2005 recording revealing Trump making demeaning remarks about women, and then declined to speak about him as he headed toward his own reelection last week.

His comments about Russia followed a telephone call between Trump and Putin on Monday and came amid reports of upheaval in the national security transition.

In their conversation, the Kremlin said, Putin and Trump agreed that U.S.-Russia relations are “unsatisfactory” and vowed to work together to improve them. Trump’s office later said that they had discussed shared threats and challenges, and the long-term relationship between them.

In his statement, McCain pointed out that Russia, in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, resumed large-scale bombardment Tuesday in Syria.

“The Obama administration’s last attempt at resetting relations with Russia culminated in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and military intervention in the Middle East,” McCain said. “At the very least, the price of another ‘reset’ would be complicity in Putin and Assad’s butchery of the Syrian people.

“That is an unacceptable price for a great nation. When America has been at its greatest, it is when we have stood on the side [of] those fighting tyranny,” McCain added. “That is where we must stand again.”

The best part of observing republicans from afar is that if you wait long enough you can watch them eat their young

Remember when Republicans thought good ol' John would make an excellent POTUS?

Remember when Republicans thought good ol' John would make an excellent POTUS?

Just showing the usual respect for a veteran POW survivor who yes, by the way, was the Republican nominee for President.

The Trump minions will attack anyone not showing due deference to the God-Emporer. It is a new day Comrade's! Bow or die, such is the price of freedom in the new Trump Godmocracy.

I still do. That guy ran one of the most decent and respectful campaigns I can remember.

And that was after he was ridiculed for being old, slammed by leftist media for being 'on the verge of death' and called racist for saying 'that guy' once in reference to Obama.

I assume Rand Paul will be next on the target list, since he's really not into the SoS potentials.

Yahuh. But now he's just a washed up old politician barely worth any respect that needs to be run out of Washington. And he may be on the verge of death still now, just like Hillary was. What he says matters little, who cares. And besides he's a POW so that means he's not a real soldier or a winner. They like winners. At least... people on the right are saying.

Yeah Trump is so evil for trying to be diplomatic with Russia rather than pushing us into a second cold war (which McCain and the military industrial complex would love). It's even crazier that some people (like Hillary) want us to shoot down Russian planes in Syria which could start WWIII. WWIII is a war no one will win if anyone is even left standing after the nukes start flying. Remember when JFK was being pushed by his generals to attack Russia during the Cuban missle crisis? Good thing cooler heads prevailed and JFK chose the route of diplomacy. There will always be war mongers out there like McCain. It is best for us to brush them aside and move on.

I could have lived with McCain were it not for Sarah Palin. I felt bad, and was quite proud of him for telling people that questioned Barack Obama being a US citizen to their faces, bluntly, yes he is an American. That was class.

His pick of Palin, not so much.

Channeling the ghost of Chamberlain? It was smart for the US and Brittain to hold off confronting the Nazis wasn't it?

We didn't have multiple thermonuclear war heads pointing at each other did we.

Do you think it was smart for Clinton to give only lip service to the Iraq and Osama situation instead of setting off a powder keg in the middle east like Bush and Obama did.

There is no legitimate comparison that can be made between the Nazis of the 1930s and Russia today. Nazi Germany in the 30s was taking over any part of Europe they could get away with. Russia is doing no such thing today. The Nazis could be fought and defeated in a conventional war. Any attempt at a conventional war with Russia (not using other countries as a proxy) would likely result in a nuclear war which could potentionally wipe all human life off the face oif the Earth. There are no winners in that type of war. Only the possibility of survivors.

A far better comparison as I noted in my previous post would be the Cuban missle crisis. If people with your World War 2 mentality (like JFK's generals) were in charge back then it would have ended in disaster as it would today. We live in a different world now. Being diplomatic doesn't mean you have to be weak or completely give in to your adversaries. JFK proved that during the Cuban missle crisis. He defused a potentially disasterous situation by being diplomatic while at the same time showing US strength. Trump will be diplomatic with Russia while at the same time showing them we wont be bullied. Hillary on the other hand has the World War 2 mentality that could have potentially kicked off World War 3 and possibly wiped out the whole human race.
