You could get a B2 and then file for an extension while in the US, which will give you longer than 6 months. But if you do that plan to not visit the US for a long while afterward.

B2 would be the only viable option with the extension after the first six months if it didn't have so many drawbacks.

Chances of a VWP-eligible person of working age being granted a B2 are not high. Especially when there is no concrete plan other than to mooch around the country wherever the wind or the RV takes them. There have been cases of VWP-eligible individuals getting a B2 where they have a concrete plan for something that will definitely take more than 90 days to accomplish - hiking the Appalachian trail is the one that springs to mind. The consular officer may well feel that 90 days on the VWP is more than adequate time to RV around the USA.

If the B2 is denied, the ESTA eligibility goes out the window with it.

There is no guarantee that the extension will be granted on a B2.

Having an American husband would also not help. The CO will assume he will fall back in love with the place again and not want to leave and the wife will end up staying. Not saying this will happen, but how the CO at interview may see the whole thing.

The OP has said that they don't want to immigrate because of work but is giving up work for a year to RV so from a CO perspective her ties to the job and country are weak. It will be a tough row to hoe to prove to the CO that you love your job and don't want to move to the USA but at the same time tell him you want to wander around in an RV for a year.

Seems like the OP has lots of other options in life for travel/adventure around the globe. If they really want to come to the US, they'll probably have to end up doing the immigrant visa. I also doubt that since the OP has a USC spouse that any non-immigrant visa would be approved at this point without extremely strong ties to their "home" (which already seemed flexible/changeable in their case).

I'd also recommend not risking losing the WVP privilege. Even though it's only 90 days (forgot about that, true that the B-2 is longer if granted) it's such a huge convenience to be able to travel to the US without the expense, stress and annoyance of applying for the B-2 or other visa every time you want to enter the US.

Yeah you're right but I could do a couple of months in the US. A couple of months in Canada. Then maybe a bit more US. All they say for the ESTA is that you need a "reasonable amount of time" between visits... so I guess I'd also have to hope for a nice person on the border. Or I can just come up with a different plan altogether!

Going to Canada doesn't reset the vwp time. But i do suggest RVing in Canada anyhow. I may be biased but we have more nature up north.
