Ex-NSA Contractor Indicted for Mis-handling Classified Information

WASHINGTONA former National Security Agency contractor amassed at least 500 million pages of government records, including top-secret information about military operations, by stealing documents bit by bit over two decades, the Justice Department alleged in a court filing submitted Thursday.

Prosecutors in August arrested and charged Harold Hal Martin III, of Glen Burnie, Md., with theft of government property and unauthorized removal or retention of classified documents. The case was kept under seal until earlier this month, when some details became public.

The new filing said the Justice Department would likely charge Mr. Martin with additional crimes, including violating the Espionage Act, an offense that carries much stiffer penalties than the current charges.

Mr. Martins attorney, Jim Wyda, declined to comment on the new filing. In the past, he has said that Mr. Martin is a patriotic American who has served his country.

A federal court has scheduled a hearing for Friday to consider whether Mr. Martin should be released while awaiting trial. The Justice Department released its 12-page document ahead of that hearing, detailing new allegations about the scope of Mr. Martins alleged theft and suggesting he had become heavily armed, accumulating 10 weapons, and had taken sophisticated steps to cover his tracks.

Some former associates had described Mr. Martin as a harmless hoarder who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. The new government filing paints a different picture, raising questions about his motives and suggesting he was capable of sharing U.S. secrets with the nations adversaries and potentially putting American lives at risk.

Martins case immediately drew comparisons to that of Edward Snowden, who was also working as a contractor for Booz Allen Hamilton when he stole classified documents that he gave to journalists. The NSA put in place so-called insider-threat detection programs after Snowdens leaks to catch future unauthorized disclosures. But it wasnt immediately clear whether those systems failed to spot Martin or if he removed the classified material before they were put in place

If by hoi polloi you mean this guy and elites you mean HRC, there are no parallels if you look at the details...more in common with Snowden or worse.

Actually, there is more in common with HRC than with Snowden. It is a matter of intent as the esteemed FBI director told us. It is fairly clear now that Snowden had an intent to share this information with whomever he thought would benefit and in turn benefit himself. This guy, even though he worked for the same contractor as Snowden does not appear to have an intent to disclose the information which was the main reason Comey said the DOJ was not going to go after Hillary. I don't dispute the fact that Hillary probably had no intent to share top secret information, I think her intent was more to keep her own secrets away from FOIA prying eyes. Therefore if it is intent that drives the decision to prosecute, this guy on the surface appears to have a defense.

The hoi polloi are who Hillary calls the common people, you know, us. Of course I am referring to Hillary as the elite. I think that is quite evident at this point.

I'm surprised Snowden wasn't somehow blamed for the recent hacks given the suspicion that has fallen on Russia recently and that he actually lives there.

The DNC / podesta and other related hacks were very clearly coming from an organized unit, very highly like a government sponsored unit, very highly likely sponsored by the Russian government. 90% is the certainty

Snowden has not been motivated to target any specific entity and has not demonstrated and special hacking skills. He was a SharePoint admin with elevated permissions with access to sensitive material that he felt belonged in the public domain for whar viewed as a greater good. Snowden has expressed an interest in coming home even if that means prison time.
