That may depend on where you are staying, some locations are more expensive to visit. For your own budgeting purposes, wouldn't you want to try to plan for food, lodging, spending money, etc.? Take in your best guess estimates of your planned expenses to your tourist visa interview.

I do not think they ask you normally how much you intend to spend.

Good point.

I have been asked by border and customs officials if I had a place to stay, money to spend, etc. But that was at the POE and not the visa interview.

What I'd like to know is what the officer might generally consider sufficient? I can live off of $1000, but if I show I only have $1000 it will be denied, no?

There are many factors that the CO will base on determining if he/she can approve your visa or not. You have to be prepared to answer and provide much more evidence to show ties to your own country and that you will be back, that is specially if you come from a high fraud country...

On the other hand, I doubt the CO will ask you how much money you will take with you, but If you tell the CO you are going for a three weeks visit with $1000 dollars, the CO might scratch his/her head and wonder. $1000 divided by 21 days = $47.62 a day, which means, accommodations (unless you are staying with friends) , food, transportation and money for medical emergencies as well. I am not saying you will be denied based on this amount, but the chances are not in your favor.

Good evening! I am curious to know how much money would the consular expect me to have if I want to spend a holiday in the US for 3 weeks.

Thanks!

Enough for at least 3 weeks, better if you have proof of booked hotel + enough for food and other expenses.

They will care more about your income on your tax reports in country of your domicile and finance flow for some long period (6-12 most recent month)

ties to your country like business, work, property owned and family

Oh, what a day, what a lovely day!

Lol. I agree with this. It was so difficult to get approved with credit card. The only time I was able to get a credit card was when I left our Ph joint account open for a year. Then they sent me one.

Lol. You get a strange look because they think you're rich for having a credit card. Poor people in the Philippines do not get approved since they require too many documents like 2 years tax return, 30 days paystub and certificate of employments. Hehe.
