Hey guys!

Thank you for ALL your help these past few months!! I so hope when I am done with all this, I can help someone too.

Please tell me about the medical. We are fully vaccinated, we come from a European country (Greece), as far as I know I am healthy :P
Only thing is I am overweight. No TB (I am vaccinated anyway), not a smoker, no STD's. Because I am a teacher I am required to take yearly blood tests for certain communicable diseases (I have none). No drug use EVER ;)
I am as far as I knonw, SANE hahaha.
What reasons are there to be denied on your medical?

I am worried about potential weight related issues like what if my cholesterol is a little high? Or my BP?
Any info you can provide on grounds of denial and any personal stories of your medicals are welcomed!!

Thank you!!!
M.

M.

Even though you're fully vaccinated, be prepared that the doctor might still tell you that some of your vaccinations are not up to American standards. I brought all my childhood vaccination records and I still got three shots at the medical appointment :(

The doctor will ask you questions about your medical history, any medications you are on and will give you a thorough whole-body examination (weight, height, check blood pressure, check your eyes, ear, throat, veins on the back of your knees (!), lymph nodes, basic neurological tests, etc.)

But just as A'n'L said obesity and high cholesterol are not grounds for denial.

All in all the medical examination was a rather pleasant experience for me :) nothing to worry about!

Thank you!!!

They did send us a list of vaccines, I have completed all of them and I am to date with repatable ones i.e. tetanus.

As I said being a teacher we need to have yearly checks and such. So I HOPE, it is ok. I even have a few vaccines that are not in the list like TB.

I will keep you posted :)

I'd love to hear back from you about this. For some reason I'm super nervous about the medical exam (and I haven't even started the actual application yet - I 130 juuuust got approved...)

It's like, I'm afraid they'll find something random wrong with me...

I have (had) chronic tonsillitis, but surely that won't be a reason to deny a visa?

And my eye sight is not the best in one eye, yet I don't have glasses at the moment (don't need them, unless driving a car)

I think I'm mostly uncomfortable with getting checked out thoroughly by some random doctor instead of one I chose.

Do they do any gynecological stuff? (I had a baby five months ago, with a biiiig head...)

I'm probably overthinking this. lol

Good luck to you!

There was a case on another forum (immigrate2us) where a member's husband got denied because during the medical the doctor discovered gang style tattoos.

The member was seeking advice for a waiver because she was adamant that her husband was not in a gang. However, the doctor apparently made the call that it was too similar.

I will see if I can find the thread and share the link if it is not prohibited.

ETA: So I just did a quick search for the word "tattoo" on the immigrate2us board and apparently it is a huge deal. Especially from Central and South America countries and Mexico. It seems they are put into a "tattoo review" where they have a specialist decide if the tattoo is gang affiliated. Interesting reads.

Last edit: Found the thread. Moderators if posting links to other message boards is a problem let me know.

http://immigrate2us.net/forum/showthread.php?69375-Facing-a-lifetime-ban&highlight=tattoo+gang

Her husband was facing a lifetime ban because of the tattooos.

The only other thing was if you have a chronic condition like cancer and they deem you likely to become a public charge they may deny you.

Otherwise they are looking for very specific communicable stuff like syphilis and TB.

It does say they check the external genitalia I assume for syphilitic evidence.

There are only a handful of things that will get you denied. Communicable diseases. These exams are done for the public health of the US — to save the US population from diseases that are basically eradicated here, like Tuberculosis. You can have cancer, diabetes, even AIDS, and be allowed in (AIDS used to be a ban but with some lobbying it is now okay). They don't care about your weight or your eyesight or your tonsillitis. :) So there is no reason to worry. The doctors do immigration medicals all the time and should be good at what they do. The exam isn't THAT thorough. They are looking for their list of communicable diseases. Some places do do a quick peek of the genitals to make sure you are the gender you say you are (they are supposed to do this per the CDC guidelines but many omit it). Your state of healing is not important to them :)

So the most common problems are:

syphilis

tuberculosis

mental health/suicide risk/self harm

drug use

Gang tattoos are rare but as pointed out above are a reason for denial

You will need to have/get the right shots

Hope that clears it up.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Luckily at my medical exam the doctor did not examine external genitalia. :)

Mine either!!! (I was NOT looking forward to that!)

I'm diabetic, on pills 3x a day, and that wasn't cause for issue. So I think it would have to be a serious health issue that makes them wonder if you'd be a burden or not.

What I miss most about Canada, in no particular order:

My family!

My friends!

KD!

Hawkins Cheezies!

Poutine!

Lays Ketchup Chips!

What I don't miss:

-40 degree weather

Part of the deciding on a burden is the sponsorship ability in correlation to the health issues.
