hi all,

just a quick question regarding content for the proof of relationship:

1) language of chats - my husband and my chats are mostly typed in chinese (this is on FB or LINE), can i turn that in? i'm guessing they won't be able to read it, so will they discredit that?

2) i've read a lot of posts about not bothering with an affidavit from friends about our relationship. will it be enough if i just provide pictures (right now i have about 8 pages/3-4 pics per page, copies of cards/letters we've sent to one another (also another 10 pages), and the above mentioned chats (i could have pages and pages of that, but not sure if i should include it).

would appreciate your advice. thank you!

The chats would be read by the CO in Taiwan, so they would be able to read them or have them translated. If you submit them with the petition then they have time to review prior to the interview.

Photos, proof of being in the same place (boarding passes, receipts, etc.) together, corresponsdence, chat history, cards and letters are all forms of evidence. Submit what you have.

Submit evidence covering the entirety of the relationship.

Besides the marriage certificate, photos of you together (of the wedding and elsewhere) and travel records of visiting each other or visiting elsewhere together, one of the best proof of relationship is the co-mingling of finances. That is: joint bank accounts, records of money sent, having each other as beneficiaries for your financial accounts, etc.

Affidavits from friends and family carry very little weight. I cannot think of any situation where they would be beneficial. Of course your friends are going to say very good things about your relationship - they're your friends!

I'll get the semantics out of the way first, the only "proof" that you will be submitting is your marriage certificate, everything else is just "evidence" of your relationship.

OP, regarding the text of this post that I placed in bold and red; USCIS as well as visa adjudication personnel at the AIT will not expect a couple living apart separated by an ocean to have those items. If you can obtain them, great, but don't go to such lengths to obtain those items for the sake of immigration alone.

To add to what others have said: You live in Taiwan with your spouse, correct? (I think I remember your previous posts on filing from abroad.) If so, include evidence that you live together: joint lease, if you have one, or other evidence of a joint address like bills, official documents with that address, mail, etc.

i know it's hard to believe, but in taiwan, it is very rare to have "joint" finances. no such thing, and many banks that my other expat friends have gone to to try and open one, have all said that there is no possibility. so...no, we do not have any joint banks.

as i rent an apartment (and work for an international org), only my name and my organisation's name is listed on the rent (the organisation pays for the rent directly).

question regarding "wedding" pictures - we registered for marriage, but have not actually had a ceremony yet (that won't happen until august). so...what about pictures of us on the day of marriage registration?

Everyone's experience is different and since affidavits are actually listed I would encourage you to send everything you can send.

Not even. Literately three affidavits from 3 friends. I'm thinking of sending some of the evidence I intend to carry to interview to NVC though so at least it can be reviewed at the embassy before interview.

This would be called side loading and would be extremely beneficial for you. I very much suggest you do so!

Those pictures work. Also any pictures of you two out and about doing things, with family, etc. Anything that shows you live together like envelopes from cards addressed to the both of you or any legal documents (driver's license maybe?) that shows you have the same address.

hi all,

thanks so much for your advice; it's really been super helpful and takes away a bit of the stress of all this paperwork!

another question related to this - does each "section" need to have a title on it? (i didn't put one on the pages i printed out). as in...a title (ie - "photos of our relationship" or "copy of chat logs" etc.) at the top of the pages for each section of evidence?

RE chat logs, there's too much to actually go through all of the chats from the past 3 years...

anyone got any advice on what/how much to send in? i was thinking about just pasting one conversation a week for the past 3 years, but even that feels like too much...or is there never "too much?"

actually i forgot to mention, too - i'd say about 90% of our chats are all typed in chinese, too. i'm guessing that doesn't have to be translated, right?
