Was added to the voters list and I'm not a US citizen yet

Unknown to me until a few days ago, my name got added to the voters list. I found out because I received a jury summons notice this week. It says on the notice that they get the names of possible jurors from the Secretary of State office.

About the fourth question on the form is "Are you a US citizen?" If you indicate no, you don't have to fill out the rest of the form. You just send it back, which I did.

I'm thinking that I should probably contact the Secretary of State office, explain that I was added to the voters list without my knowledge, and ask them to remove me from it until I'm a US citizen. Is that the right step to take? Is there anything else I should do? My concern is about how this might affect me when I apply for US citizenship.

I came to the US on a K-1 visa in 2007, got married 4 days later, and have followed all the steps to stay here legally with my husband. My green card is good until 2021, and I plan to become a US citizen sometime before then.

When I got my US driver's license years ago, the Secretary of State staff person was going to add me to the voters list. I had to tell her not to because I'm not a US citizen. When I renewed my license again 2 months ago, the subject of the voters list didn't come up. But apparently I was added to the list then, because I'm on it now. It's also possible that I was added 4 years ago and just found out now because I received the jury summons notice.

Thanks for your help with this situation.

I would call your voters registration centre and ask to be removed, then contact a lawyer. This could be a very costly mistake. Always double check what you're signing.

Some DMVs were adding everyone to the voters list until recently... make sure you don't vote and ask to be removed. Not sure the mistake was done by vanee. I had an employer report I was a US citizen even though all the forms I signed and documents I submitted says I am a LPR.

I agree it may not be op's mistake. Hopefully it's reversible

It might help if you can get a letter from some state official, saying that you were added to the voter list in error.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

My husband got a summons, California DMV was sending every name. He sent it back with the I AM NOT A CITIZEN ticked ( kept a copy in case ) and it wasn't even mentioned during citizenship. On a side note, his friend back east for voted in the first election of the current idiot in the white house was questioned, admitted that he voted and got his citizenship anyway, so much for the high standards of our immigration department.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

My wife got several of these. She just answered not a citizen and sent them back. Our county just goes by the drivers license registry, up to you to tell them your not eligible to serve.

I too received a jury summons. I called the number to ask what I needed to do to show that I cannot respond to the summons because I'm not a citizen. I ended up just submitting a copy of my LPR card and the summons to the courthouse and I haven't heard anything about it since.

Thanks everyone for your help. It's good to know that others have also experienced this and didn't have problems because of it.

To clarify, I never asked or consented to be on the voters list. I took the drivers license renewal form that was mailed to me to the SOS office, paid the fee, got a new photo, and got my new license. That was all.

I just emailed the voter information center for my state, explained the situation, and asked to be removed from the voters list. I'm going to keep the reply in case I need it down the road.

I didn't consent either. They were just taking names from the DMV.

Here's the reply I got:

I have checked the voter registration system and your name does not appear on it, fortunately. If you would like something in a letter regarding your voter status, I would be glad to provide it. As far as your jury summons goes, the list of available jurors is comprised of both registered voters and those holding a Michigan Drivers License/Michigan ID. I am forwarding your e-mail to the 9th Circuit Court for verification that your name has been removed from the Jury list. Please contact me should you have any further questions on this matter.

So, the problem is solved. Thanks again everyone for your help.

For future reference: don't freak out if you get a jury summons and you're an LPR. It does not mean necessarily that you're registered to vote. Maybe it's different in every state, but I know that here in TX names go on the jury rolls from DMV as well as voter registration. As you don't have to be a citizen to have a DL/State ID, it naturally happens that non-citizens can receive jury summons. You send it back checking the non-citizen checkbox and that's that.
