I am trying to complete the I-864 document for my wife's AOS and I am finding that some of the entries required cannot be entered/edited.

In particular , I am not able to enter :

Part 5. Sponsor's Household Size
1. Provide the number you entered in Part 3., Item Number 28. - tis field does not allow an entry
Persons NOT sponsored in this affidavit:
2. Yourself.
Same with:
8. Add together Part 5., Item Numbers 1. - 7. and enter the
number here.
Household Size:

Does not allow me to enter anything into the form. Is this by design? Am I doing something wrong?

Instructions say boxes will auto-populate but they don't seem to be doing so

Hello, I had the same problem!

After I printed it, the spaces was in blanch.

People told me to write down by hands (black ink).

Yes, I had the same issue. Does anyone know if it is ok to Hand write the number if it doesn't automatically default to "1"?

If you refer to the I-864 instructions, it clearly states you can type or print in black ink.

How to Fill Out Form I-864

1. Type or print legibly in black ink.

You have to either update your Adobe reader or install if you don't have it http://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-information

Once you have it installed or updated, go back to the USCIS website, click on the form (PDF format) and save it to your desktop/computer. Open the file and from there it'll let you type your answers. The form will have the barcode at the bottom.

I was having such a hard time with this, even after updating my adobe reader and java. My brilliant husband told me to export it as PDF to my desktop (file --> export as PDF), and then it worked! Someone else mentioned this, but I still didn't get it. Now the household size box is empty, and although you cannot type an answer in it, you can at least write it with black ink once printed.

I hope that helps!

Hello!

I am also having trouble adjusting this file. Downloaded Adobe, Java is enabled, but still nothing :(

My computer is a Mac, but we also tried my husbands windows laptop.

Has anyone been successful yet?

The household size is still showing as 1, so we can't even adjust it with a pen. :(

Thank you!!

Are you trying to fill it out from the browser? That won't work as you often don't get the barcode at the bottom of the form if you print it like that. Download it to your computer and then fill it out.

Hi Scandi. Yes we did that, we downloaded it, saved as a pdf. It lets us fill out the majority of the fields. It is Part 5.1 that is frozen/blocked and 5.2 and 5.8 are auto-populated with "1". We need to be able to add "1" in the blocked field to get it to auto-populate 5.8 correctly. Even printing and hand writing it in prints with the "1" in the field so we'd have to white it out which looks off.

Does anyone have a link to a properly working form? This is frustrating and a bit ridiculous.

I've encountered numerous problems filling in USCIS forms in general - mostly due to missing input fields, but I also had the issue where I-864 would always put a 1 for household size in an incorrect spot in every editor I tried. I used PDFescape.com to add any missing fields, or white out/cover any fields that were incorrectly calculated (such as the I-864 household size calculation) and place a new field or value on top. I don't have the original fixed version I created, but the correct font settings in PDFescape are size 14, courier new, bold.

If you do it this way it won't record the information in the 2D barcode field. For forms that have the 2D barcode you should either do all fields electronically or all fields by hand. The reason being that if it comes in being filled electronically they will scan the barcode and if the information then is not recorded properly there it will auto-generate a fault with household size, since the information is "missing". Many ppl have gotten rfe's for this. It might happen that some ppl doing the scanning actually look, but from what we have seen with rfe's many do not.

Also, never white out any fields by hand... here are the form filling tips and instructions from the uscis website
